36mp... 4.6 fps continuous drive...

*goggle* O_o

You could almost print those 7360 x 4912 images pixel-for-pixel at 1440dpi
(you'd get a 5.1 x 3.4 inch print, with no upscaling for printer, and no interpolation)

What scares the hell out of me is the size each RAW file is going to be!! :dizzy:

Alas my trusty D300 is starting to show its age. I reckon it will probably see me through the 2012 season, at which point I will need to start thinking about an upgrade/replacement.

Does anyone on UKAR own one of these D800 beasts? The spec is amazing, obviously, but I just wondered how it handles specifically in the sphere of aviation photography - worth the step-up from the 300, or is there an 'interim' body which I should be considering first?

I already use a D7000 as my back-up body, incidentally, so would be looking for something in the same mould as the 300 and the 800 appears to fit the bill.

Thanks in advance, as always.

There is a review on dpreview.com, they think it isn't suited to action photography.

I am going to wait and see what comes out next year.

Yes, I saw that review myself; bit baffled TBH because, if it shoots a respectable 4fps (assuming that you have a fast enough CF card) and its autofocus is quick, I can't see how it could fail to be suited to action photography...? But yes, quite a few reviews seem to suggest that the 800 is primarily a landscape camera.

Interesting that there are rumours about a direct replacement for the D300s, as I say I think I'll be hanging fire at least until the end of the season anyway so let's see what else arises in the meantime.

I think the reviews are focusing (sic!) on the fact that at that pixel count it can be seen as emminently suitable as an alternative to medium format cameras for landscape photogaphy.

Action photogaphy in most reviewers minds would be fast sports - i.e. F1 / Moto GP etc. - a D4 shoots at up to 11fps

Also, there is a lot for HD video in this camera.

Just my 2p worth.

I shudder at the amount of hard disk space needed to cope with such files - my D7000 at half the resolution is bad enough when shooting raw. Oh for an affordable and reliable 16TB drive...

I will third that......how many pixels does anybody want?, unless you will be wrapping a bus or the side of a building with your images.

There has to be a time when it all comes to a grinding halt, has'nt there?
