I'll probably go on the Saturday, with Duxford on the Sunday. Is the airport any good for photography these days? Obviously will only matter if stuff is actually flying from there!

Was toying with that idea myself but might actually plump for rehearsal action at Duxford instead... a better clientele than darn Sarfend.

The old favrate spot by the church is now harder to access as Eastwoodbery Lane has been diverted, it now runs parallel to the runway with that section being re-named St Laurence Way it joins up with Nestuda Way. The area of land by the crash gate at the 06 end of the runway is now owned by the church and is gated.

There is an embankment alongside the new road with a public footpath running on top which gives very good views of the 06 end of the runway.

Anything lining up for takeoff will be more or less in front of you including the Easyjet and Aer Lingus Regional services.

Anything landing will also be in front of you.

Tesco have a large store 5mins from this spot so food and toilets are not too far away, there is also street parking in the other side of the A127 Prince Avenue.

would be nice for f16 and/or vulcan on both days as well. that might keep people at the seaside resort.

As said the F16 is just up the road at Duxford and the Vulcan last year must have made an impact?

We have one come over Langdon Hills about 2,000 feet AMSL between 9:30pm and 10pm if their is an Easterly wind. Being we are around 300-380 feet above sea level here, it makes it around 1,600 feet here

Didn't think we'd get such low aircraft on approach to Southend.

A bit of a silly question probably... but as I do not keep on top of goings on in aviation much these days...

Will the airport be open to the public like it has been in previous years? I'd probably imagine not seeing at its a fully functioning airport these days?

Will it be seafront only for pics?

I can't imagine the airport will be open like it was in the past . Although the Vulcan Guys might have an open day. It might be worth contacting them or popping down to the airport on the day to have a look.

Seems to be too many prop planes, that seem to loose the wow factor along 2 miles of sea front. I think last year people will remember the Tornado role demos, the Vulcan on Saturday and the Reds on Sunday.

The average person in the street expects their to be a lot of noise and Fast jets, most were commenting on the Vulcan and the Red Arrows last year.

This year you only really have the Typhoon that will provide the attention grabbing display.

It is also a shame the Sea King/RNLI demo is not there. I know it is a free show and you cannot complain, I do feel that there are a lot of cheaper time fillers in there this year.

The Catalina and Black Cats are a good call though, they are always impressive at Southend

It is a shame that a few k couldn't have been spent on getting Sally B there. IMHO there are too many small planes, SWIP Team, Trig Team, Blades, SBach300, Tutor, Wingwalkers.

Those moaning about the airshow also hate the airport (but support the Thames estuary plans!) and vitually any change in Southend, they do not want a new state of the art Library, they did not want the seafront cleaned up and they are against a proposed £35million museum for the Saxon King relics that were found a few year back (search King of Bling) as well as that it will be a museum of the Thames estuary, Southend at War and a major new art gallery. It has been designed to shore up the cliffs where they collapsed and will reinstate the bandstand at the top of the cliffs.

Whilst it's my local papers website I hardly ever look at it simply because of the petty arguments that always break out on the messages.

Reading through those, often badly spelt, poorly phrased rants which typify minorities against anything I wouldn't have thought the organisers need worry too much, especially if the weather holds. Although the references to lack of publicity and advertising are a concern. Anyway good luck to the show - I'd be there were it not for a prior committment to Duxford. Have fun!

I'm afraid it's a 'no' on both accounts - despite a Southend Council publication stating that there would be. The airport is now pretty much 'locked-down' to anyone without official security i.d.

The VRT are working on specified requirements for holding open days around XL426, but as things stand she is 'airside' and as such not accessable by the public, along with the entire airport.

I have been to Southend every year since it started and this year looks poor sorry.
Even last year without the Typhoon they managed to get the Tornado pair and Vulcan.

Yes people will turn up if the weather is good but next year they will think twice,Free or not free you still need to entertain and the small aircraft good though they are do get lost with the size of the display line.
The lack of the reds has not helped them this year which is not there fault but even so.
10 years ago that F16 at Duxford this Sunday would also be on the list at Southend,They never used to miss a trick like that.
Lets hope they pull something out the bag this week.

I would rather take the Family and Pay to get in Duxford,At least they have been bold.
