I have two A580s with Sigma 18-250 on one and the Sony 70-400 G SSM on the other. Not a cheap lens (nearly £2K now) by any means but well worth the money. If you go for a non-Sony lens, whether Tamron or Sigma, make sure you get one with the High Speed Motor as anything else will strip the internal motor due to the Sony focusing speed.

You could always upgrade to the Sony 70-300mm G SSM Lens, which is what I used at Duxford last Sunday and will be using at Old Warden this Sunday, or if you're feeling really strong as it's a bit heavy a Sony 70-400mm G SSM. The G stands for Gold and refers to Sony top of the range lens.

I don't know of any books dedicated to airshow photography and most of what I learnt about aviation photography I had Googled and a lot of it was highly technical stuff. A lot of aviation photography web sites usually have a page on aeroplane/air show how to photography and as your'e using a Sony and the 70-300mm G SSM has been mentioned, you might find this page from JCoombesAviation, who posts on this forum a MerlinJon, most helpful.

In order of escalating cost I would look at Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di USD (~£350), Sony 70-300 G SSM (~£700) & Sony 70-400 G SSM (~£1300) [acknowledged as best in class for the least few years].
I wouldn't ignore the Sigmas either but make sure that you get 1 with HSM if you do go Sigma as the screw-driven versions do have a reputation for breaking their AF gearing on Sonys.

There is a Sony 70-400 on Ebay second hand for under £1000 and several 70-300 lenses for under £600

I've recently changed to the Tamron SP as mentioned above, half the proce of the Sony G equivalent, http://kurtmunger.com a website with a comparison or visit the http://www.dyxum.com/lenses/Tamron-SP-7 ... ns595.html website where you will see example photos and owner reviews

I'm happy with mine having upgraded from the standard Sony 75-300 and then Monolta Beercan. Ultimately though next will be the Sony G followed by the Sony 70-400G.

Depends how your bank accounts doing really !

Lot of guys use him for Canon stuff but he also does some Sony.
