Confirmed Attendees 2012 (updated 7th September)

For the first 'proper' participation update it's very promising. The KDC is a nice addition and it's good to see the Noggie F-16 back and as for the P3 - been a while since we had one of those.

Doesn't look like a particularly big static this year according to the map - or they're going to cram them all in:

As an enthusiast/spotter who is trying to get to the show from the U.S. I'd love it if they filled any vacant spots with 6 squadron Typhoons!

I'd love to be able to see as many of their aircraft as possible!

On a side note, has anyone heard any rumours or rumblings regarding any special announcements at the show (like new squadrons standing up? ) or did I just dream that I heard that somewhere?

Thanks

John

Kstater94, there seems to be a growing mystery over what's actually going on regarding the stand up of any new squadrons. The last official position about the total Typhoon squadrons was that there'd be a total of 5 operational ones. If so this leaves two more to form. So far they get the prize for the longest ever flash to bang time for forming on a new type.

Stand Up Ceremony for 1(F) Squadron to happen at the airshow:

Typhoon Growth Continues with Reformation of No1(F) Squadron

The Royal Air Force has announced that the fourth front line Typhoon squadron will stand up at RAF Leuchars in September.

Number 1 (Fighter) Squadron will reform officially at the RAF Leuchars Jubilee Airshow on 15 September becoming the fourth front line squadron to operate the multi-role FGR4 Typhoon. It will be the second Typhoon Squadron based in Scotland, following the stand up of 6 Squadron at Leuchars in 2010.

They could have held last years on the parade ground!

That looks like where the static has been for the last few shows.

More interesting, it doesn't appear that any of the trade stands are on the 'flightline' side of the taxiway.

If there is another Squadron Re-Forming at Leuchars this Year are we likely to have another Flypast? Remembering the Spitfire, Tornado F.3 and Typhoon version a couple of Years ago although obviously the F.3 won't be part of it maybe a Typhoon, Spitfire and Rebel X-Wing Fighter from Star Wars.

Oh no, the Falcon at stall speed would be much better!

I'd be surprised if there wasn't some sort of flypast - what form that takes will be anyone's guess though.

Update today 19/06/2012

Civilian Flying

SE5a

A World War 1 fighter aircraft, the SE5a was one of the fastest aircraft of the period with its 200hp engine powering it to top speeds of just over 135 mph. The SE5a entered service over the Western Front in June 1917. Many of the top Allied aces flew this fighter including Billy Bishop, Cecil Lewis and Albert Ball. Neil Geddes pilots the replica SE5a on display which has become a regular visitor to RAF Leuchars.

Wildcat Aerobatics

Wildcat Aerobatics perform close formation aerobatics and synchronised manoeuvres using a pair of Pitts Special aircraft. They are based in East Anglia and new to the display circuit for 2012.

De Havilland Vampire

The de Havilland Vampire was commissioned during WWII, but never saw combat during the war. It served with frontline squadrons until 1955 and as a jet trainer until 1966. Approximately 3000 Vampires were built in total with its design also developed into the naval Sea Vampire and the de Havilland Venom. The three aircraft displaying are from the Norwegian Historic Flight who displayed in 2011 as a pair.

Extra 300 – The Blades

The Blades are the only full-time civilian formation display team in the UK and the world’s only globally-accredited aerobatic airline. The entire team are ex-RAF and Red Arrows jet pilots, with over 20 years of display experience on a vast range of aircraft. Flying the Extra 300, The Blades have built a fantastic reputation and are one of the most highly respected teams in the world.

Venom

The de Havilland DH 112 Venom was a British postwar single-engined jet aircraft developed from the de Havilland Vampire. It served with the RAF as a single-seat fighter-bomber and two-seat night fighter. The Venom was an interim between the first generation of British jet fighters – straight-wing aircraft powered by centrifugal flow engines such as the Gloster Meteor and the Vampire and later swept wing, axial flow-engined designs such as the Hawker Hunter and de Havilland Sea Vixen.

Huey and Loach

The UH-1H Huey and OH-6 Loach are both Vietnam-era helicopters and perform an exciting and unique flying display as a pair. The Huey is one of the most famous helicopters in history and has served with many Air Forces around the world in the Air Assault and Medivac roles. The Loach is a small tactical helicopter which was used as a scout.
