Park and View advice

Park and View advice

Postby Logster on Sun 10 Jun 2012, 12:42 pm

Hello,

Apologies if this is posted elsewhere - I couldn't find it.

I have never been to RIAT and unfortunately this year can't make it (don't ask!), but I could make the one of the park and view days, most likely Friday. What I was wondering is whether park and view is worth it? And if it is do you have any advice as to which end is better or if it is a bit of a scrum? I am not that bothered about photography but would love to see a few of the aircraft arrive/rehearse as it is a great line up. Also are there any times of day that are best (I have a work meeting near there and want to know best time to arrange it so as not to miss too much!)
Any suggestions or advice would be gratefully received.
Thanks
Matt

I would say it is definately worth it. The whelford end is the best in my view and the busiest. They also have food available through the day. You will get to see a lot of rehearsals and arrivals on the friday.

Friday would be busy most of the day I would imagine. I'd get the meeting out of the way early and spend as much of the day there as you can.

Since we're here, what's the best P&V for departures on the monday?

I guess it depends on a) what runway they are using and b) do you want to see the aircraft airbourne or at the start of its run? I always use which ever end they are departing from, normally east. I don't take photos, just numbers, but if you want a spot at the front get there very early!

How early is very early?? think I'll end up at the western end if it's normal conditions.

They open the gates at 07:30, but I think you can park up earlier? I got there about 8 last year and it was already 2 deep at the front.

The queue for the park and view normally starts forming at about 05:00 - 05:30 (sometimes even earlier!).

Never been one for getting there at silly o'clock myself. Always made do with standing back and taking shots over peoples shoulders. Or taking a ladder and using that.

You only need to get there mega early if you must have a spot against the fence.

I tend to put my stuff (chair etc) in the middle of P&V east and run around catching stuff in different areas
