RIAT 2013 Public Theme

RIAT 2013 Public Theme

Postby The Voice of RIAT on Thu 14 Jun 2012, 2:13 pm

Hi guys,

We are trying to finalise the themes for RIAT 2013 and we would like to know if you have any good ideas for next year's public theme? Over the past few years we have had: The Queen's Diamond Jubilee, 40th Anniversary of RIAT and Battle of Britain 70th Anniversary.

Please post any ideas below....

70th anniversary of military jet aircraft - nice excuse to get an Me-262 over, and fly it in formation with a couple of Meteors and Vampires...

Here are my suggestions:

East meets West
As more and more Eastern countries start to come to Western airshows, it would make a good opportunity.
Or you can also apply i too the manufacturers (Boeing - BAE - Lockheed- ... versus Antonov - Sukhoi - MiG - ...)

SAR - Coastguard
Since there're a lot of nice SAR squadrons around flying some nice helicopters and airplanes.

1953 - 60 years ago the year the World Air Speed record was broken four times ( twice by UK and twice by US ) and the year Fairford opened it's hard runway for B36 operations.

What about a trainer meet? Rather than a focus being on Tutors, G120s etc. I'm thinking more Iskras, SF-5Ms, TAV-8Bs, Sk60s and L39s!

Operational theme wise I think we are long overdue a fighter meet (2004?), and I also second Dan's idea very much. Also worth noting, and a real last chance perhaps, 50 years of the Transall? 70th anniversary of the Meteor as well I believe!

Public theme wise, perhaps:
- Progression of a Pilot (viewing the training system used by different countries and different time periods and grouping the appropriate aircraft together)
- Royal Review (60 years almost to the day of the Royal Review; relevant types in attendance?)

I like this idea very much. Get a selection of early jet aircraft displaying and give us a glimpse of the future as well

As 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of Blue Steel becoming operational and of RAF Fylingdales Ballistic Missile Early Warning Station being declared operational, how about these:

1. The Cold War - plenty of scope for a variety of older NATO and eastern European types.

2. Early Warning and Control - AWACS & AEW types

As a lot of anniversaries seem to be repeated after 10 years: 110 years since Kitty Hawk?

Has RIAT ever celebrated history of formation flying and aerobatics?? Just seems that every year there are several display teams yet they never get there own theme.

Also a helicopter meet?? So have more than just the apache demos in the flying display??

Lets see, my suggestion is ' Back to the past... ', this would consist of trying to get as many aircraft types that attended in the first decade of AT/IAT, to attend for RIAT 2013, they could have some of the types in the flying display, and perhaps a mass flypast during the flypast slot, and there could also perhaps be a dedicated static display area for the types that would confirm to attend!? Just a thought.. I know there are many types that will be impossible to secure, but there are also possibilities of other types, and I'm sure that theme would prove popular...

Fly Navy - Bringing together naval aircraft from across the world, both helicopters and fixed-wing - 'Featuring the first and last appearance of the cancelled UK F-35B'
Rotorspin - Helicopters are the backbone of the modern air force, army and navy, seems a pity we can't make more of them at the airshow. Chance to get the Tiger and NH90s over!

3 Ideas

Military Might!
Get the worlds armed forces to bring there planes together to see the power and might of the world airforces.

Airarms Combined
Bring together the worlds airarms with there aircraft to share ideas, Defence Diplomacy, and to show off each airarms diffrent aircraft and to show how they are ever changing.

Dambusters 70th
The famous dambusters anniversary is happening next year. Get PA474 to do a role demo with pyrotechnics and try and persuade the canadians to bring theres over.

I like the 70th anniversary of jet ops. Definitely a reason to get the Me 262, and definitely a reason to fly it with the Meteor and Vampire.
