Reference the Avenger and AS365, it could be as simple a fact as both types are operated by private contract, a contract that does not include any hours included for flying to and from airshow appearances, they may have Royal Navy on the side but that means nothing in todays world.

Don't suppose there is any chance of the F3Tornado being addad to static.

There is an air show happening. A few items that would have an esoteric appeal to a small group of enthusiats have, sadly, been forced to cancel. The general public won't notice one bit as long as they've got their Red Arrows and Commando Assault.

It's a little unfair to treat the 'general public' as all being quite that thick and/or easy to please. The majority of people may not be die-hard enthusiasts, but they know what they like and will generally know what to expect from a show venue, and at a big show like VL they will expect to see (and hear) fast jets. It doesn't necessarily matter whether that jet has a massive rarity factor, but I heard a lot of positive comment last year from the general public regarding the Mig-29 - they know it's Russian (yes I know it was a Polish AF example), and they know it's rare and they know it was exciting.
When considering a specific aircraft type however, more members of the general public will be disappointed with the loss of the Vulcan than anything else.
For me, the addition of the An-124 is definitely the star-of-the-show (bet it cancels); but given the likelihood of really crap weather, what may or may not fly is probably moot anyway.

If the 124 is there and it does rain at least you've got somewhere to shelter.

Remember sitting inside a C5 at Brize Norton one year while it piddled down outside.

At the end of the day if you look at the items scheduled to fly it is a really good mix of aircraft, helicopters, aerobatics etc with the exception being fast jets. I was looking forward to the rafales as it was brilliant last year but personally there is still a lot to get excited about. I haven't seen a meteor, vampire or venom and am really looking forward to it. I also haven't seen a big Antonov since I was a kid and my Dad took me to Farnborough. and the Commando Assault is always fantastic.
On a positive note last year the F-16 and Rafale really scared the kids so at least I won't have to worry about that!!

Hopefully next year all those that couldn't make it will be back and we will have a more fast jet orientated show, but for now I am still looking forward to a great day out on Saturday.

For me the biggest disappointment was the loss of the Vixen, I still haven't seen it display, almost did at Biggin Hill in 2008 but it went tech I think.

You won't be disappointed with the Meteor (or any of the classic jets), it's a thing of beauty and puts in a spirited display, I was fortunate enough to see it at Duxford recently

Though you may be disappointed with the METEORological conditions.........I'll get my coat :-X

Okay, I'm heading to Florennes this weekend to a blindng looking show so Yeovilton's woes are irrelevant to me. However, yet again I have to ask why should one show bag all the available (for instance) F-16 displays (as VL did t'other year but with no clashes) leaving VL with very little fast jet action. Over a decade ago the European Airshow Council was set up and one of their agenda items was to sort this out and make the particpation spread fairer. Pointless- as we've seen many times, and unfortunately it's ALWAYS the UK events that miss out....

It's 350 miles from Florennes to Yeovilton takes about an hour for a fast jet to fly from one to the other it is a great shame they can't be arsed to flly across for a cup of tea and a display

Only 4  And anyway, the repetition will be broken up by the Slovak Mig, Italian Typhoon, Hornets and Polish SU-22s all flying :ninja:

Do feel sorry for yeovilton though, seems unfair on them to recieve this criticism for reasons out of their control...

At the end of the day no one is forcing punters to go....if you don't like it then just stay at home.....simples!
Personaly, I am dissapointed with the aircraft unable to attend but its all beyond my...and indeed our....control so we just have to shrug it off and get on with it. I will still enjoy my fix of aviation over a couple of days and I am sure the members of my family attending for the first time will too......Tonka demo and CA finale will be just the best for a 10 year old boy!

Cant please all the people all the time........

Some of my pics of the Meteor which displayed at Duxford recently - http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=78464719@N08&q=g-bwmf

As this is my first time at Yeovilton, can someone give me some advice on the display flight path please? I know I'll be south facing (not great), but do the displays arc round like at Duxford or are they pretty much in an east-west oval like at Fairford?

Thanks in advance.

There is one Tornado on static and the role demo in the flying display. Have to say I'm disappointed in the number of cancellations but what can one do?

It takes less than 20 mins for a Hawk (from wheels up to touch down) to transit from Culdrose to Yeovilton, 3-4hrs by car! So I reckon about 45mins or less for someone else to make that quick hop over the Channel..... It would be nice for someone to do that wouldn't it!

ST, does the fact that Florennes is the main Belgian Show have anything to do with it? (Assets for UK displays go to RIAT or Waddo?)

Everybody in Europe avoids the RIAT weekend because they know that will hoover participation.

Perhaps Yeovilton have to look at the calender next year and pick a date that doesn't have any serious competition.
