I guess that would be RAF Shawbury. Well worth a tour if you get chance.

I have passed it a few times and knew of its helicopter activities but had no idea it was a storage depot for aircraft past their sell-by date. What do they have there?

A lot of Hawks! The odd Sea King is there too, but they are more than likely being used as training up at DCAE Cosford. The place isn't a boneyard as such, more of a storage depot, aircraft are mothballed there.

There are about 14 Tornados, 45 Tucanos and 46 Hawks stored at Shawbury according to the 2012 MAM.

Tom,

They've never had Sea Kings in store at Shawbury (historically rotary aircraft have generally been stored in B Shop at Fleetlands - and before that at Wroughton).

Currently stored at Shawbury are plenty of Hawk T.1's (some out of hours - and others awaiting rework for the Reds), Tucano T.1's, 5? Pumas (two have arrived this week), 3 RN Merlins, a handful of Tornados (some have left in the past few weeks for RTP at Leeming) and plenty of Gazelle AH.1's!

In the past there has been a fascinating selection of machines - such as Andovers, Beavers, Buccaneers, Bulldogs, Canberras, Chipmunks, Harriers, Hunters, Jaguars, Jet Provosts, Jetstreams, Lightning (just the one!), Meteor (just one), Pembrokes, Phantoms, Sea Devons, Sea Harriers, Sea Herons, Spitfire (just one), Viking gliders, Wessex and Whirlwinds.

I heartily recommend anyone interested in this place to join the Shawbury Spotters E-Group

shawburyspotters-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

and take a look at some of the photos in the AMSU Folder within the Photos Area of the group.

They've been posted by a really ace photographer over his many years spent there! :king:

Hi Guys,

This might be the closest thing you get to resemble a British Bone Yard!

Photos taken a couple of weeks ago. Must admit I was a bit like a kid in a sweet shop!

Cheers

Also if you e mail the assistant CRO on mark.vickers253@mod.uk. tell him you like to put your name down for a spotters tour he'll take your details and let you know when there are vacancies, its £10 donation per person, all money goes to the Station Commanders charity and you get a free biscuit and cuppa at the end. There are no restrictions on photo's and you will enter every hangar on the station.
