Reds - 'Bird Strike'

Postby stevebrodie on Mon 09 Jul 2012, 12:14 pm

All,

When Reds, came into land after their display, one of the guys bugged out and went round; then their was a gap of a couple of minutes till the final Red came into land. Standing next to someone with a scanner - thought i heard them talk about a possible bird strike - anyone else hear this or know what happened ?

Red 2 suffered a bird strike running in to break and was inspected in mid air by Red 1 before landing last ans being escorted to parking by fire engines.

There is no news if there was any damage or not.

I think they did the right thing not breaking and inspecting it away from the public, it was bird strike which caused Jon Egging's aircraft to fail at Bournemouth. Though at Bournemouth they didn't say anything about it, or at least I didn't hear anything about it until I had read the news later.

The Red Arrows have had to endure too many tragedies recently I sincerely hope that they can go back to being known for their supreme flying and world beating aerobatics and not for the terrible things.

After we'd been told what had happened there was a bit of tension in the, err, air but a round of applause when he touched down, didnt see any visible damage when he landed & taxied past. Glad it turned out all ok, could've been nasty

I took detailed images of both sides of the aircraft as it returned.

I've only looked at them on the camera but couldn't see any visible damage.

I'm told apparently not, though that's what was widely reported in the media and I can recall (wrongly or rightly) people who saw the incident saying similar and also I can recall seeing phone camera footage of what looks like a flame out.

Obviously, I could be wrong was the only theory I knew until yesterday.

I have a friend involved in the RAF debriefs at Bournemouth airport, I don't think you'll ever be told what exactly happened, it looked like he lost the engine as he broke to the circuit resulting in massive airspeed loss and at low altitude.
It was a very sad day at the airport.
