Italeri Tornado GR.1 in 1:48

Postby mattlaker on Fri 09 Oct 2009, 5:00 pm

Hi all- Following from the Swordfish, I had a choice- three possibilities that I was thinking of. However, decided on this one instead- I am probably going to take a while on this one, although not sure whether I will take longer on this one than I did on the Phantom or not! I will be using the following to augment the build- Paragon Front Fin Correction, Paragon Flaps and Slats set, Paragon Burner Cans, Paragon Weighted Wheels and Paragon Ejector Seats. Probably the next thing i'll be throwing at this is the Flightpath 1,000lb LGB set to brighten the payload up a bit! Should be a fun build, although I would welcome any advice from anyone who has tackled this kit with the resin parts before on how best to go about it- only the Flaps and Slats had instructions with them!

The Paragon stuff is generally excellent, the burners cans etc generally fit pretty well with minimal fettling. Only one I can't help you with is the fin correction as I used an Airfix kit, but I doubt you'll run into major problems with the resin. Good luck! Might do another Tonka myself next, but just not got time at present

Morning Matt.

Glad to see your going for this, it's a great kit that i really enjoy building.

I would say the only parts that need taking your time on is the Flap & Slat set. I have tried cutting the wings out both apart and glued together, when i do another i would probably have the wings cemented together first. For removing the plastic i used my scribing tool and a metal rule and passed over the same line until i cut through. I would also suggest going at least a millimetre under what the instructions say as you can always remove more as you offer up the parts to the wings.

I needed some filler on both leading edge inserts so don't panic when you see a step from the resin upto the plastic. As i said before the main thing is to take your time, under cut what the instructions say and just keep offering the parts up as you go.

If you have any questions as you go don't hesitate to give me a shout.

Here's mine from earlier in the year. http://forums.airshows.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=5018

Looking forward to seeing it come together.

Marcus

Radio-style update, but no pictures as yet!

Bang seats are now painted- have scratched some ejector handles to be added soon, when the paint has dried. The pit has had fine glass paper added to the floor and painted green for the non-slip flooring, and the IPs are painted up, awaiting the detailing on the dials and clear green overcoat on the display screens. These will be attached to the cockpit interior tub when I have got to paint the smaller bits and bobs for the pit, and scratched some details for this. There is some detailing needed on the nav console hood, which i will work out how to do later on. I'll build the smaller console from the top from plasticard and add some wiring when the two front halves are built up. Finally, i will need to build a couple of smaller panels for the front pit, as these are missing from the kit. I'm looking forward to the challenge!!! :D

Unfortunately not- events have conspired against me and I haven't had time to get anything more done. I'll be trying to get the pit finished off this evening tho!

Hi all,

firstly, an apology to anyone expecting an update on this- she is currently sat in the dining room in the same state she was just over a month ago. I have been inundated recently- i have had one newspaper article and two magazine articles to write, 4 properties to research, 3 all night investigations in 4 days, numerous meetings to attend, some experimental equipment to plan and prepare for building, mountains of footage to analyse, a case file to build, some photography jobs, plus my day job to fit in in the mean time, and all in the space of the last month! I am hoping to find some time over the next week or so to get back into the swing of things, so hopefully there will be an update soon! Bear with me- my girlfriend is leaving me for two months, so hopefully i'll have been able to throw some paint at it in the mean time!!!

All the best and keep up the good work!!!

Ok, i actually did something on this! the pit is now 90% finished, with a couple more touches then i can pop it in, and close up the front end. Also, have got the saw out and removed the front fin, and replaced with the resin section which needs a tiny bit of filler. Nothing photographical yet tho.

This is an update of sorts-

due to recent events, i have unfortunately had to suspend all model making indefinitely. I will continue to lurk and endeavour to comment as and when i can. However, with building, I will do my upmost to start again as soon as my situation changes. I wish you all the best for the future, and will hopefully hear from you guys soon! Keep churning out the quality and i'll keep watching from a distance.

Resurrecting this old thread...

Have been away for a while- moved house and did not have enough space to carry on building, and no reliable internet connection...

Anyway, things have changed, moved in with my gorgeous lady, have got virgin coming to install a decent internet setup this week, and what is more, I am going to be starting building again, and... found all of the bits for this- RESULT!!!

So, will be picking up where I left off! How is everyone? What did I miss?
