Damyns hall 2012

Postby markstringer on Sun 15 Jul 2012, 12:16 pm

Looking like a decent little show this year again. No Sally B due to the poxy Olympics restrictions but confirmed BBMF spit hurri and lanc, Kent spitfire, hurribomber / kitty hawk and potential sea fury T.20!!!

Let's hope for some ok weather.

Previous shows have had little or no static re warbirds. The stated runway length is 650 meters. Anyone know if the warbirds will be based there or just display?

Usually things like the Bf108, Harvard, Stearman and smaller aircraft can fly from there. Anything bigger/with higher performance than a Harvard I don't think is possible, as I think the strip is too short.

I usually go to this on the Sun but am in two minds this year - don't want to go and get stuck in a jam on way out and risk missing the 100m final!

Yes, I was sure I read somewhere about a runway extension but perhaps it was just planned and never actually happened. Checked with the organisers and they have confirmed that runway is too short for the WW2 fighters to land. Still looks like a good show,

If my understanding of the Olympics restrictions is correct, only aircraft operating from the event can display. I'm pretty sure that the Kent Spitfire has been quoted as cancelled for that reason, and presumably that would be the case for any other warbird unable to land at Damyns. The military can do as they please so hopefully the BBMF are exempt.

Well linking up a theme in the Off Topic section on Olympic security, what a dreadful and sad irony that the sight and sound of the Kent Spitfire will not been experienced at Damyns Hall.
An iconic airframe that has come to represent our fight for freedon, liberty and all that was best about this Country grounded by the shadow (and fear) of 21st Century terrorism.
If ever there WAS a time to display the Spitfire, it would be during the Olympics. Somehow we have got our values the wrong way round. Sorry for mini-rant.

800m is generally the rule for min runway length for heavy warbirds such as P-51. Having said that I think MH434 was landed there by Ray a few years ago though...

Will the H11 stuff be operating from Damyns or NW then?

I was at Damyns this morning for half an hour or so, watching from the cafe gardens. Where is the crowdline for the show?

Had it confirmed that runway is too short for the big warbirds like the Mustang, still looks like a good show

From the website it looks like the olympics has still had an effect - only BBMF and RNHF dislpaying...

Sat Display Flight Start 13.25
Lancaster (BBMF)
Spitfire (BBMF)
Hurricane (BBMF)
Hawker Sea Fury (RNHF)

Sun Display Flight Start 14.40

Merlin is the only static item. Blimp is here plus based microlights/Cessnas and Yak. All of which are wrapped up or parked by the flying club area. No sign of Harvard, Bf108 or other visitors. The way cars are parked and the ground is arranged I don't think the airfield is in use. Waiting for the BBMF then heading home. Otherilitary ground displays are good if tanks & Jeeps are your thing. The air restrictions have rather affected this show :(
