Warbird Gourmet #2: Thunder Over Michigan - UPDATED!
Greetings from a very, very, very, very, very, VERY hot, dry, drought-ridden North American continent!
Some of you will recall my humble coverage of the utterly delectable Canadian Warplane Heritage 40th Anniversary show two months ago, and you might be forgiven for thinking, "with that much epicness, someone would have their lifetime fill of warbirds." Of course, none of us on UKAR think that way, and so a little closer to home this time was Thunder Over Michigan in the great state of... wait for it... Michigan! Close to Detroit but far enough away, this is one of the premier warbird shows in North America, and I was about to find out why. Would I give it the same A++++ as I gave the CWH show? Well, maybe not; it did lack a bit of the exotica, but with a B-29, B-17, P-38, two P-47s, three B-25s (one didn't fly), F-86, Sea Harrier, static F-5E, and more Mustangs than you could shake a stick at (including a Mustang that isn't actually a Mustang... more on that), it'd be hard to call it anything less than incredible. But enough rambling.
First some early morning photos from the co-located Yankee Air Museum
1.
2.
Flying display highlights (I would've included the SHAR but it was horribly backlit when it displayed; I'll try to salvage a few shots for the inevitable updates!)
3.
(Fifi is actually giving a ride here, on the Friday arrivals day - the passenger up front is photographing the photographers!)
4. What a display - SIX passes!
5. "What? You want ANOTHER topside? Eh, alright, here you go!"
6. This was actually a highlight for me - first time I've seen a BT-13 doing aerobatics, and incredibly well flown.
7.
8.
9.
10.
11.
12.
13.
14.
15. "Alright, one of you doesn't belong..."
16.
17. Vehicles making their way out for the ground combat demonstration. The sole downside to buying a photo pit pass was that we were at the far end of the crowd line and couldn't see the battle taking place.
18. Arriving on Friday... yep, that's an AT-11 Kansan. And it's flying. The only one I know of that does.
19. Also arriving on the Friday
20.
21. Not part of the flying display, but this Bell 47 was doing a few photo runs prior to the show start
22. Also arriving pre-show - a baby DC-9!
And some static displays
23. Guess the type
24. One of the local DC-9s, and nice to see up close too. Perhaps I should photoshop out the toilets?
25. Even better - a DC-8! Always liked the Super 8's.
26.
27.
28.

Thunder Over Michigan selects a "theme aircraft" every year and they try to attract as many of that type as possible. This year's aircraft was the P-51 Mustang. I counted 14 airframes total, which was a far cry from the 30+ that were rumored in the months leading up to the show, but still a mighty impressive lineup, and among these were no less than three razorbacks (including the Mustang that isn't a Mustang). Eleven took part in the flying display. Here are the Ponies.
31. The Mustang that isn't a Mustang: the A-36A Apache. Sadly it was unable to take part in the flying display.
32. Two of the rarest 'Stangs: P-51B and A-36A
33. $10 for a scissor lift ride!
34.
35. Working on "Gunfighter"
36.
37. Is this not the most glorious sight ever?
38.
39.
40. And to close, one more of the P-51B (one of two "Old Crows" at the show)
Hope you enjoyed looking!

Excellent set of photos, well taken and all sharp and crisp.
Re: Warbird Gourmet #2: Thunder Over Michigan
Looks like a fantastic show.In some respects what UKAR should be all about. Really like the early morning (F4 at dawn, we just don't get summer mornings like that in blighty much these days) and evening shots. To go to an airshow where you have a line up of Mustangs with an Aggressor F5, heaven!
Great shots and thanks for posting.

What a terrific set of photos aided by that rare UK phenomena of brilliant lighting - would trade you a little of your excess heat for a lot of our excess H2O -thanks for sharing

Love the Mustangs! I believe that 'Baby Duck' is a recent restoration belonging to the Warbird Heritage Foundation.

Wow, thanks for all the replies! Glad you like. And now for some more!
Starting with the 'Stangs:
41.
42.
43.
44. 'Nother Baby Duck topside
45.
46.
47.
48.
49.
50.
51.
52. Baby Duck arriving on the Friday
53. Gunfighter giving us a topside almost all the way down to the pavement on its Friday arrival
54.
Thunderbolts...
55. The Jugs flew twice, once in the morning as the close air support element of the ground combat demo and later with the fighter and bomber flight
56.
57. Later in the day, when the lighting wasn't so good
58.
59.
60.
And more B-29 action...
61.
62. Fifi was hauling ass on this pass... never seen a four-piston bomber move so fast!
63. Dirty pass!
64. Bringing in the beast
65. Earlier in the day, returning from a passenger flight
Sabre Dance...
66. Liked the cloud scape on this one
67.
68. Arriving in style!
69. Topside pass on arrival
70. Display rehearsal
Managed to salvage a few of the SHAR...
71.
72. The "Centurion" sticker on the tail is to mark the fact that Saturday's display was Art Nalls' 100th flight in the Sea Harrier since acquiring it
And the others.
73. Not thrilled with the lighting on this one, but I had to include the home team's flagship
74. The only Naval warbird that wasn't a trainer present at the show
75. B-25J
76. B-25D
77.
78.
79. Some Canadian friends
80. USN MH-60S, only military participant in the flying display (if you don't include the Coast Guard MH-65 that went tech part way through its display)
81. Germans getting ready for battle
82. And the Allies
83.
84.
85.
86.
87.
And lastly, three from the museum collection at dawn
88.
89.
90.
---
Correct!
Never thought I'd say this after the involuntary bath I received on the Wednesday and Friday preceding RIAT, but with half the US in drought condition, I'd be glad to trade weather for a few weeks!
Yup.

Tremendous set, from what looked to be another corking airshow. As good as the warbirds are though, my favourite shot is #26 of the three Hornets - great angle and composition.

I never thought they'd be another UKAR forum member at the show! May have even spoke to you on Friday in the photo pit without realising?! My shots have some serious competition now!

Make that a hat trick of UKARians! I was inside on the Saturday but parked in the "naughty field" on Sunday (actually just off the airport perimeter road to the North, complete with a range of food trucks on constant patrol). My shots don't have competition, theyve been blown away! Great shots.
Re: Warbird Gourmet #2: Thunder Over Michigan - UPDATED!
More great shots! The noseart on the B-25 Georgie's Gal is fantastic, by Bruce Crandall. On the port side she's Angela, an angel with a halo, while on the starboard side she's helena, a devil with horns and a tail. I think that's the right way round?!
It was also very hot at Oshkosh, 95 on the Monday!

Don't think so, as I was amongst the throng of trash talkers on the 9-27 side of the enclosure. If you happened to notice a bigger gentleman with a couple of 1D Mark IVs and f/2.8L super telephoto primes... that wasn't me. I was the guy in the floppy hat next to him with the dinky little 70-200mm f/2.8L and rented 300mm f/4L thinking "I'd have to sell everything I had to get even one of those lenses"
All the comments are much appreciated, glad you all like!

Re: Warbird Gourmet #2: Thunder Over Michigan - UPDATED!
As I was walking around at this show I was thinking how airshows have changed over the years. Back in the 1980's here in the states there was usually 90% of the aircraft were active duty jets and the other 10% were the so called warbirds. Before all these planes were phased out in the 1990's and later there were always lots of A-4's, A-6's, A-7's, A-10's plus all the fighters like the F-4, F-5, F-14, F-15, F-16, and F-18 along with the T-33, T-38, and T-45 trainers. Throw in an occasional B-52 along with KC-197 refuelers and some AWACS and you had quite a show plus sometimes some Tornadoes etc from over the pond would come and an occasional Mig -29. I went to a show in 1988 at the London, Ontario Canada celebrating the 30th anniversay of the Phantom and there were over 100 planes there with 35 of them being Phantoms. Those were the glory days for us jet freaks!!!!!!!!!!
