Raspberry Ripples and other delights - Final Batch

Post by comet4 »

Following pictures of test aircraft in my Farnborough 1962 and Abingdon threads, which generated some favourable comment, I thought that I would do a thread specifically on test aircraft from RAE, ETPS, A&AEE and other operators. When I started, I didn't realise how many aircraft were involved, so if there is any interest in the subject, I can add a lot more pictures.

Here is the second batch of pictures including an extra one of Buccaneer XW987 for Maisie and the rarely seen Phantom XT597. Also of interest is Pilatus PC-9, the BAE trials aircraft.

the 3 RAE/A&AEE Buccs are the same 3 in South Africa, all bought by Thunder city, but now out of use.

Always love the 'Raspberries'. 31 different types wore that livery  But it's now disappearing fast.

(Just one thing - XW750 wasn't officially an Andover.)

Have you got any of your user name - XV814?

Here is Batch 3 on this subject. Thanks to Andover for pointing out the correct identity of XW750. I'm pleased to tell him that I have found a picture of Comet XV814 for him - the only one I've got.

Funny you should say that...

Made from card, balsa and plastic tubing! Markings, windows, aerials and touching up, as you can see, have yet to be applied.

Thanks for photo of '814 btw Graham.

Here is the final batch of pictures. Canberra WH876 was an ejection seat test vehicle for A & AEE and Meteor WS838 was with the RAE.
Although I surprised myself with the number of pictures that I had, there are a few notable exceptions and would be obliged if anyone has pictures of any of the following aircraft in these test colours that they could post - Argosy, Bristol Freighter, Beverley, Britannia, Hastings and Sea Vixen.
Thanks for looking

Andover, great work on that model!!

The Meteor WS838, where was that taken? Looks familiar from when I was a kid. Shame it's the final update I could look at Ripples all day! Superb post though, thanks!

I've just been trawling my hard drive for my one photo of the Britannia - without any success so far  ,but came across these three A&AEE aircraft which I hope are of interest.

The picture of WS838 was taken at Cosford in 1984. It is now at the Midland Aircraft Museum in different colours although it was in this scheme last time I saw it - perhaps this is where you saw it.

I was born in '84 so I may have seen it at a very early age! I'll have to ask my dad.

Buccaneer 987 was in fact the last Buccaneer I saw flying.

They had gone from service with the RAF by then but lingered at Boscombe.
Anyway, sitting in my car at the end of Brize one midweek afternoon 987 came in, did a t&g and went round for a missed approach, over my head.......and off never to be seen in flight by me again.

Managed to get 2 pics of which 1 still survives in my files.

Here's one that you didn't mention - the VC10 that I think was based at Bedford....
