Dramatic Stampe Recovery
Dramatic Stampe Recovery
Stampe G-OODE, took off from Headcorn in style for a local flight.
After a few minutes into the air heading towards Tenterden the engine developed a misfire which eventually led to the engine stopping completely.
The pilot made a magnificent landing into a newly cultivated field without damage to himself, his passenger or the aircraft - Well Done!!
The challenge now was how to get it out without dismantling it, the aircraft was well and truly stuck.
This is how it was done.
Full report in December Flyer.
Leaving Headcorn in Style
Safely back at Headcorn,
One happy and relieved man, well done Tony the pilot,

That's something you don't see every day. Good to hear that people and plane were all okay.

Re: Dramatic Stampe Recovery
Certainly impressive, what was the cause of the engine failure? was it a Gipsy?

What a fantastic set! Those wings must be pretty strong!

A fabulous result all round. Big hats off to the pilot, many congratulations to the passenger for staying calm, amazing work by all the rescue crews and helicopter pilot and of course, a massive well done to you Richard for such a marvellous set of pictures documenting the occasion.
Please though, put me out of my misery, am I going bonkers or did I see photographs comparatively recently of a similar exercise being carried out with another aircraft?? It may not have been on here but I dont know where else I would have seen the photos.
Well done to all involved, a fab result

Interesting... I don't see any lift spoilers on the Stampe wings during recovery as a sling load. I'd be interested to hear about how the load behaved and max IAS achieved in level flight - slowish, I bet!

Visited Headcorn and thankfully saw this in the hangar end of last month with no sign of the drama it had been through! My guide did have a conversation with someone about the incident but didnt take much notice!!!

Thanks for the Tube link.
Very nicely done! I can't claim to having lifted an aeroplane; everything else though, from bog rolls to a live cow on an 80' strop. The cow didn't need any lift spoilers I might add.

Hello UK Stampe fans,
Congratulations to the team for this superb rescue!
French Stampe fans appréciate and also the report and photos from Richard.
I will publish about this in my magazine "Bleu Ciel magazine" (inhéritage of general aviation with a special tribute to Stampe airplanes).
To British Stampe fans: "SV-4, légende volante" is a superb book by Reginald Jouhaud (Sorry only in french). It's available at : bleucielmagazine@orange.fr
Regards from France.
