Wittmund "F-4 Retirement" - June 2013

Post by PeterR »

Details are still to be confirmed, but let's try and keep all the discussion about the 2013 Wittmund "airshow" in this thread!

This is going to be the first event with a flying display of Luftwaffe aircraft. Normal flying but it's a new beginning after the Ramstein disaster in 1988.
The commander wants to have 4 special painted Phantoms. Three F-4 Phantom will get the camouflage schemes that the Luftwaffe had in Phantom history.
One F-4 Phantom is going to be a coloured on.
An unlimited spotterday will be held on Friday 28th June.
The commander was speaking of an historic event because it's going to be the very last time for phantoms to fly in the Luftwaffe. They will be scrapped soon after this Open Day on 29th June. On this day the first Typhoon for Wittmund will arrive too.

Very interesting, is it worth trying to get a UKAR tour going? I think a fair few of us would like to send off the old girl in some style, after so many of it's appearances at UK airshows.

Pity it is the same date as Zeltweg.

Maybe some people higher up on the chain of command hope Zeltweg will eat up all demos so they can cancel this one?

I can't get the Friday off to take part in the spotters' day tour with Forest tours and the Ian Allan trip appears to be over a few days; anybody know if there's any possibliity of somebody organising a trip going out late Friday from Stansted/Luton/Birmingham/EM and returning late Saturday or Sunday?

Hi gents,

we will still have two additonal F-4´s flying within WTD 61 after JG 71 ceased flying with F-4´s.....so another chance for another "phlyout" special paint

37+01 was choosen to get the "phinal" design as the "phlyout" bird...as the Wing Commander said well: "The "phirst" one will be also the last one."
U will see a brandnew Norm 90 design , which is already phlying right now in Wittmund, beside a "Norm 72" and also "Norm 81" phlying side-by-side....
The special color design will be choosen soon...so stay tuned!

We will also see Eurofighter Ops already from April on in Wittmund too.

Hope that helps u guys, and dont miss this event, its the "event" in Germany in 2013 and a sad day for me, as JG 71 will loose all "mighty Phantoms" :wall:

Cheers
Mick

The norm 72 scheme has appeared and looks superb, best scheme on the F-4Fs.

Apparently it has been returned from Jever to Wittmund, courtesy Scramble.

The coloured jet will be the last of the 4, the first two have been done, but you wouldn't recognise the first because its the current scheme, the norm 81, sometimes referred to as the mouse scheme will be the third.

The Germans rarely do abominations when it comes to special schemes for anniversaries or retirements.

Very nice, the norm 81, not as smart as the '72 but far nicer than the '90. We wait for the special to complete the set.

I don't speak German but the phrase at the bottom of the web notice

"Be advised that the aircraft at display are in place for the "Tag der offenen Tür" on the next day and therefore cannot be moved for a better shot! Some fences may be in place due to safety regulations and will also have to stay in place".

Suggests to me that there is an open day on the 29th.

You are quite correct, "Tag der offenen Tür" translates into Open Day.
