Heathrow in 2013

Post by TonyO »

This thread will be updated as the year goes by with interesting movements or snaps from when the weather actually co-operates.

Feel free to add any interesting moves or shots of the day from the world's busiest international airport.

Heathrow - January 1, 2013

First day of the year and with it blue skies and sunshine. Qatar halted 787 ops and replaced the Dreamliner with a 777LR while LOT was due to bring in a 787 on its afternoon rotation.

Hi, great shots - my son wants me to take him down one crisp sunny Sunday morning to get some shots - where would you recommend to be a good place to park up for a couple of hours ?

If they come in on 27L is Hatton Cross / Fagg's Road area the best location or would you suggest elsewhere ?

Thanks

Angus

If landing on 27L then Myrtle Avenue is the place to be - the green at the end of the road is the most popular photography spot for 27L arrivals (TW14 9QU for sat nav/online mapping). Parking can be an issue - if the road itself is full, then along Hatton Road (turn right out of Myrtle Avenue) on the left just past the Duke of Wellington pub is the Bedfont Recreation Ground which has a small (and usually empty) car park.
If landing on 27R then you can either park at Hatton Cross tube station (or in/near Myrtle Ave.) and get a bus such as the 285 from Hatton Cross to the northside/central area (they are free) and get off at the 27R threshold just past BA maintenance for final approach shots there.
The departure shots on this thread are taken from/near the BP petrol station near the end of 27L (or the 09R threshold if you prefer) when departures are using 27L. Parking in the petrol station is often impossible (full of parked-up cabbies) so park near the Rising Sun pub in Stanwell village (TW19 7LB), walk across the small bridge and through the gate and turn left and then along to the grass just before the petrol station.

Good luck - bring some good weather with you!

Cheers,
Ralph

Hi, many thanks for the locations - looks like Myrtle is the place to be !

Now, I have one more question too (sorry) - is there anyway of finding out which runway is 'currently' in use - I appreciate that they can change between leaving home and arriving, but it will give us an idea of where to head for initially.

For up to date weather conditions, I use an app called AeroWeather, which is handy for cloud levels and more accurate forecasting.

After seeing all the various photos via this site, he has really got the bug for it, and has already started his on 'blog-site' for anything photographic and in particular aviation based - we even ended up at Luton Airport (crash gate 5) for lunch yesterday as we were in the area !

Thanks,

Angus

Heathrow - January 13, 2013

Twelve days after the last visit to the world's busiest airport and operations shifted the 09 runways, however a fantastic forecast proved overly optimistic and the expected clear blue skies were replaced by amassing layers of cloud. Not all hope was lost however, with a couple of sunlit departures in the cold.

As Tony mentionded, slim picks in terms of shots in the sun but here are an additional two departure shots, quite happy with the Malaysian as its an angle i've wanted of that scheme.

Angus,
The runway use at Heathrow alternates on a weekly basis when the 27s are in use with one being used for landing up to 15:00 at which point landings switch to the other. The next week the runway use will be the opposite.
If 09s are in use them most will land on 09L all day. If you take a look at the following site, it shows Heathrow in the centre of the screen and the two runways are clearly shown as extended grey lines, along with the traffic currently using them......

Some shots from the 27th January and the 2nd February. Both days scuppered by the poor forecasting that seems to be standard fare this year. A few hours on the 27th saw a rare afternoon arrival of the Royal Brunei Flight from Bandar, having suffered a delay of many hours.

I like the shot of 777-300ER G-STBA. I worked on TBA the other day when it was in for an A check. Spent my break time enjoying the flight crew rest area, very comfy!

Any chance that this thread is closed and separate threads are set up for March, April, May, etc? Reason being the user has to scroll through the previous posts to see the new photos. Yes, I'm aware the user can stack by ascending, descending but it seems to default back to the original setting once the user has logged out.
