Well progress is coming along slowly on this but it is going together really well with very few problems and the joins are all good apart from 1 small gap in the wing root when i joined the wings to the fuselage. Now i have had plenty of advice about the colouring on this and i shall be using Hannants Xtracrylix on this and i do hope that i have obtained the correct ones.

FS34102 comes out as XA1806 or RAL 6003
FS36081 comes out as XA1203 or RLM 74
FS34079 comes out as XA1205 or RLM 71

The fuselage went together well with no nasty gaps or seems.
Image

Have joined the wings to the main body and sprayed the wheel bays
Image

Have masked the canopy and sealed them down using blu tack as it will be displayed with them open
Image

Spayed the canopy black and when i look at this image i have noticed a small gap between the wind shield and the pilots canopy
Image

Outer wings joined in place and the next stage will be to prime it
Image

Hopefully have another update soon.

Well progress as been slow but i have now undercoated it and it revealed a few places that needed filling so that was sorted and i have now done the first shade of green. I know there is a bit of over spray but this will go as the work progresses. Now i am using Hannants Xtracrylix and i have experienced a problem with these i have thinned the paint to the consistency of milk but i am having spray at around 30-40 PSI to achieve a result any less and the nozzle very quickly becomes clogged. What am i doing wrong any ideas. Will hopefully do the next shade of green today and then the grey.

Primed and ready to go.

The gaps have now been rectified.

And on with the first shade of green.

Now that is a very good question. Derek and myself use these paints with a hairy stick and thinning them can be a nightmare as what amount of thinners you add to them seems to change from whichever pot of paint you are using! :dunno:

But, she is looking good sir.

Had exactly the same problems with Xtracrylix myself, only solution as you said is high PSI and lots of thinners!

Nevertheless looking great, really need to continue mine

Just a brief update to say that this has been a nightmare in the spraying department. The dark green went on reasonably ok and the olive green was terrible and the dark grey has been an absolute nightmare to thick to thin to runny it splattered but hey ho after a lot of swearing and cursing this is the result. I know it's not perfect and i do have some touching up to do but after the troubles that i have endured i don't think it is too bad.

Good work on the freehand camo. If your going to go over the colours again, maybe start with the grey first then work your way to the shades of green. Sofar this one looks to be better then your 1/48 phantom.

Well having masked and sprayed the tail
Image

When the tape was removed from the the tail this is the end result
Image

Now i have never tried to mask curves before and i think this went very well and i am surprised that i even managed to get them almost symmetrical
Image

And when the tape was removed this was the result. I am really annoyed with myself over the camera windows especially this one.
Image

Only 1 little problem i have is the canopies were secured with Blu-Tac but they are now so secure that i cannot remove them i think the paint has stuck them very well unfortunately. They need to be removed to fit the seats in so any tips other than brute force i do not want to damage anything at this stage. I have also sprayed and decaled the tanks and the ECM pod.
Next stage will be the finer details and then give it a coat of clear before applying the decals.

Until the next time

Doug, I've just caught up with your last post.

You really are doing a nice job of this build mate.

Any update on how you got on removing the canopy?

I'd get a new blade and score along the seam edge, if it's only paint holding it down, it'll score through it enough to break it apart.

Whats the frosting on the camera window??

Well you will be pleased to know that the canopies are off and the seats fitted and i should have a final update very soon and i think you will like it.

The window would not fit flush so i did some sanding with a fine sander and got glue and dust on my finger and it unfortunately got on the window.

Lesson learnt keep work surfaces clean  ............ But it could be frosting from ice accumulation at high altitude

Now that's good thinking. But only thing is you can't have the wheels down to use that excuse

Still looking superb. Masking looks really good to me especially that curve on the nose.

Re: Big scale GB RF-4C Phantom II 68-0567 Finished

Well this has been finished now for about 3 weeks but i have just not got round to taking and posting some pictures so just a couple for now and i will take some photos over the next few days.
It's a good job the undercarriage was designed to slam onto the decks of carriers because when i was moving it it slipped out of my hand and landed rather heavily and a couple of bits broke off. I have to say i have enjoyed building this kit and it will be the last 1/32nd scale kit i build for a while due to the sheer size. I do have 4 more in my stash.
I would like to say thanks for all the support , advice and comments that you guys have given me during the build.

I thought i would make the seats look better with some Aires seat straps

And finally the finished beast

I hope you like it and i shall get some more photos up pretty soon
