1992 Farnborough - the Russian invasion - Final Update

1992 Farnborough - the Russian invasion - Final Update

Postby comet4 on Sat 19 Jan 2013, 12:43 pm

Although there had been a Russian presence at several previous Farnborough shows, 1992 was the year that they came in force. It was an interesting show for me as it was the first and only time that I saw a lot of the aircraft on show. As usual, hope that there is something a little bit different here.

Nice shots brings back many memories. Well remember the two support IL-76's that arrived around 18:00 one evening before the show and were gone within a couple of hours. Rember seeing the Tu-22 down wind, never though I would see one in the flesh. Wonder if that was the year of the very low approach of the IL-96, was standing at The Swan and thought I may not see another airshow :dizzy: .

I was there on one of the trade days but did not see the Il-96 that year. It did feature in the 1994 Farnborough Show though - another interesting year.
Here is a picture of the Il-96 at the 1994 show. I can't say if it had just done a low pass over The Swan!

That was some line-up. The two Su-27s and the Su-24 turned up at RAF Leuchars' airshow the following week. Quite an incredible sight to see them flying over a base that only a few years before would have merited a very different reception. The single-seat Su-27 displayed in some of the murkiest weather ever seen on the Saturday, the same day as the last ever RAF Phantom display at the base.

Would be great to see the Russians back - you can but dream!

I remember this show and I was only 8. The Mil-26 and Tu-22 was favourites of mine!
