Big Scale GB. 1/24 Airfix Mosquito updated & Finished!

Post by Fumbles »

This will be my main entry for the Big scale group build. I hope that I will also have time to build my special hobby 1/32 X-15A. If not. I'll build it anyways. I have been itching to build this Mosquito kit since I bought it a year ago. Now I have the excuse. :yahoo: I'll be starting it when I get back from Las Vegas on the 27th. So for now I just have a box shot,a huge amount of parts and the only aftermarket stuff I'll be using which consists of a instrument panel upgrade decal. I'll also be using Xtradecal again so I can build this one with a Canadian connection.

The enormous box shot!
Image

The entire contents of the kit. The couch that the sprues are on is a full size 84 inch couch. Not some condo sized mini. Kind of gives you an idea of the size of the kit and amount of parts. I believe there are just under 600 parts.
Image

Last is the instrument decal I'll be using and the decals from Xtradecal showing which aircraft I'll be building.
Image

So till the 27th.. That's all for now.

Not just the bank manager either. My wife for another and my loft is starting to creak under the weight of kits that shouted "buy me, buy me".

Hey Guys...

Well starting this one took a little longer then I wanted. But I did start it. So for a first update this one will be a larger then normal one.
Since getting back from las Vegas I have had a busy time here at home between work and another project. Thankfully I'm all caught up now. So here we go.

First shot is where I was about two weeks ago. The base painting of the cockpit was started. Don't mind the green. It was just the flash and gloss coat that brings out a strange shade.
Image

Second shot is the instrument panel. Airfix pit a large amount of detail into this kit.
Image

Next up is where I am tonight. About to seal the two halves of the fuselage. This is my dirtied up cockpit. I made the seat belts out of some tape, doubled up then I pinned holes through. Once that was done I painted them with a sand colour adding some copper to the holes. I think they came out alright?
Image

Image

Last two shots are the fuselage halves. Not a huge amount of dirt added here. If I added more there would be less light reflected inside.
Image

Image

That is all for now. The two halves go together tonight. Then it will be time to work on the massively detailed engines.
As usual C&C is always welcome. Next update should be next weekend.

Great stuff so far. Interestingly Mosquito fuselages were actually built like that - in two halves split vertically.

Ok then... Finally a very small update, a quick post and run off to work. This is why I like the timeframe allowed in this group build. I knew this spring was going to be a busy one between working 6 days a week and yeap Scott a few trips to Las Vegas to see the sun since it has been rather scarce here in Vancouver till recently.
I have both sides of the fuselage put together and sanded out with no seams. But the little time I did have I put together the Merlin Engines. Each engine consisting of 35 to 40 parts each I still have not finished them. They are dirtier then what the picture shows. The flash took away quite a bit, I'll get some shots in natural light later. Plus I'll add a little more wear and tear and tone down the copper.
So here they are a nice pair of Merlins.

Hi again everyone. Time for a little bigger update this time. The kit is progressing well. The kit is now standing on it's own gear. I'm almost at the painting point. I'll admit that I am building this kit all over the place, I'm not following the instructions step by step. I find it easier this way. The only bit that I have had a hard time with on this build was the landing gear... There was a quite a few hours of frustration on that part. Hence the quietness of the build till now.

So here we go..
The wing and engines mounted.
Image

Next up I added some dirt spray to the gear flaps. I'll finsh the paint of the gear and add some heave mud soon.
Image

Its a beast in size...
Image

Last shot for now. Just to show the size of this beast. This is my 1/32 scale CF-18 sitting right on top of the Mosquito.
Image

Thats all for now. I'm through the hard part now. Paint will be soon. Thanks again for the comments and looking.

Hi again everyone

I'm a day late on the update. I just got into one of those painting marathons and just couldn't stop. So here is the update on the Mosquito. Things are starting to fly along now. No major problems yet with the build. The gun pack a little tricky to put in place was about the only trouble I have had since last update.

On with the shots. From a few days ago.
Image

Fuel tanks installed.
Image

I wanted to try this, just needed a big enough kit. Some tinfoil for the Navigation lights.
Image

Bomb bay done... I added a little graffiti to the bombs. Figured I would give that a shot.
Image

Forward guns now done.
Image

Gun cowling on. But not glued in place for easy removal to see inside.
Image

One of the Nav lights. They do look better in person.
Image

Canopy installed and painted for the interior.
Image

First coat of the camouflage sprayed on. The gray is not as blue as it looks.
Image

Image

Figuring out where the invasion strips will be placed.
Image

Almost done with the stripes.
Image

Camouflage is almost done.
Image

Bottom shot almost done.
Image

Last shot for now..... Still a lot of work to do. As I said before "it will be a squeaker for the deadline" but it will be done.
Image

Thanks for looking and the comments.
