VC10 Cosford

Post by Flare Path »

Had a VC10 - very low - do a couple of missed approach maneuvers over Cosford this morning (1030).

Any reason why? Fantastic sight and sound.

Could this be the future Museum exhibit? Was it the VC-10 with the Fancy Tail Markings?

I think you're right. It was certainly gear down over the garden this morning - looking to land. May have been a dummy run!

Yep, VC-10 did 3 approaches during today and headed off to Brize, and yes it's destined for the museum!

Cheers

I have read on the VC-10 forum that XR808 is being retired in the next two weeks. :(

It was XR808 doing the approaches yesterday I believe.

So the question is, will "BOB" be at RIAT or in God's own County"?

BOB... I like that

So is it landing at Cosford then? Didn't think the runway was long enough. If it is I might pop up to see it.

Would be handy if anyone knew the date of it coming to Cosford. Would be awesome to see it.

Was told by the crew who flew her in at Waddington she is due into Bruntingthorpe after she appears at RIAT in 2 weeks  . not being broken up though just into storage for about a year until they decide where she is going.

I thought the general feeling was it was earmarked for Cosford, would be a bit strange to send it to Bruntingthorpe then to road it to Cosford in a year's time.

Yep, it's been reported for some time that 'Bob will end up as a museum exhibit at Cosford (FlyPast reported it in their VC10 feature at least two years ago).

For those questioning the runway length, a VC10 has landed there before (before leaving on a trailer minus wings and tail a few years ago... :-X ). It was also seen doing touch and goes at Cranwell on their short runway on Tuesday morning.

That would be the one that wasn't owned by the museum

I would be very interested to get confirmation of date/time into Cosford. Does anyone have any thoughts on fence location if on easterlies ?

Railway station at Cosford is the best viewing location for the runway, it'll use the full length!

I was speaking with the VC10 guys at yeovilton, and he said they have not decided what they are doing with XR808. I'm not sure if this is correct or he is just hiding something but he also said its not possible to land a VC10 at Cosford!

Just have to wait and see.

Apparently there are paperwork issues concerning landing on such a short runway. May be next week sometime now.

Which is a bugger,as I'm in Cornwall.

I suspect that means they're still convincing someone at the top of the food chain to sign it off.

If that is the case, it will not happen. Nobody will disregard the Release to Service even with a minimum crew, payload, fuel and good brakes, and therefore the task is either legal or not and one assumes that it is.

More likely that they are waiting for favourable weather conditions, and some wind in particular would help, which has not been the case in the last week. They will probably hold out for an easterly wind to avoid landing with the rail embankment on the approach.

Southerly winds are forecast for the week except for tomorrow  when an easterly component is forecast. So my guess is tomorrow (Monday) or a longer wait. This is my own opinion / speculation and not based on any inside information.

If they can fly a Vulcan, MK1 Victors (Sadly gone - they should have kept a Mk1 from the training school  ), a Britannia, Trident and the previous BA VC10 & 707 into Cosford, why is there a problem with a VC10 now?

Oh I forgot, elfin safety!
