HMS Ark Royal, 892 Naval Air Squadron Phantom FG1

Post by bigcrow »

Looking through my late fathers, Mick Freer's vast collection of slides over the weekend found this which maybe of interest?

XT872/R-004 Phantom FG1 892 Naval Air Squadron, RNAS Yeovilton caught departing it's home base resplendent in Royal Silver Jubilee markings. The aircraft was scrapped at RAF Wattisham, October 1991.

Thanks... Plenty more, my Dad starting shooting slides (Kodachrome 25/64) from 1971, probably around 10,000 in his collection.

Awesome.
Love Phantoms, and I love them the most in their Fleet Air Arm guise.
Only wish I had been around to see them in active service.

Spey Phantoms were just very special and that's a cracking image (as expected!) by your dad Stu. One point though - 892 moved to Leuchars in 71/2?-ish as their shore base.

Thanks Geoff, but by June 1977 when this was taken, wasn't there shore base Yeovilton?

Hey Stu, they operated out of VL in June for the Silver Jubilee flypast (hence the crowned 77 logo on the nose) over the Solent, which unfortunately got canned due to inclement weather. They were joined by the Gannets of 849 (shore based at Lossie) but I think the Buccs operated out of Honington - their shore base. They were to form up in an EIIR formation with the FRADU Hunters flying an anchor - joined by something like 120 helicopters if memory serves... :hypno:

Thanks for the info Geoff, bit before my time mate, it must have been one hell of a sight... He shot the Gannets on the same day as well, when I've got time I'll scan those as well...

They were at Leuchars in 77 when I was posted there in the July.
