50 Shades of Grey.......Lightnings !

Post by Fred Martin »

Probably the only aircraft in RAF service to have its apearance impoved , compared to its previous green /grey camouflage , the Lightning sported a variety of two & three tone grey schemes during its final years of service . I think this selection of Kodachrome slides speaks for itself . Just a shame that they wern't reverted to their original natural metal state .

Excellent images
They looked good in the Grey schemes but I may be in a small minority as I actually preferred the grey/green cammo .

Great images of a superb subject, one of the tail codes is BK2? Anyone know the reason?

The 1984 11Sqn display season (flown by John Aldington) had two F3s - BK1 and spare BK2, the "BK" presumably merely relating to "Binbrook" as B* was the 11Sqn code sequence..

XR726 - different main-wheel?

Post by NickB »

The main wheel on XR726 (7th picture down) looks different to the rest - slightly 'dished' as opposed to the flat surface of the main wheel on the other airframes. An optical illusion or have others spotted this?
Geeky I know, but had to ask!

Hi, lovely pics.
Curious about the pic of black tailed BA. Was this taken on the 11 Sqn reunion day, the spring after the rather wet Last Last lightning Show? If so, we were standing almost next to one another!
Thanks

Binbrook used to be one of my very favourite spotting destinations, with flying to and beyond dusk even on long summer evenings when all the Phantom aircrew at the other bases had quit at tea and toast time.

Sitting on a post and rails fence by the crash gate with our legs on the inside of the fence, pilots waving as they taxied out.... happy days.

Thanks for posting!
