Biggin Hill Wessex

Post by habu21 »

Not really a warbird or classic jet but nowhere else to put this.
Never thought I would ever see one of these in the skies again. This had been doing flights all day over the house so on the third pass I jumped in the the car
and hey presto! What a beautiful looking flying machine.

Fantastic images or a lovely old machine.

This wasn't today was it? I had an un-decodable Ghanaian on radar this morning and wondered if it was this. Kicking myself for not investigating now!

Does anyone have information on this Wessex? Will she be heading off to Ghana for Search and Rescue work as the scheme suggests? Or (what I'm hoping) is she due a repaint and staying in the UK? Just thinking what an airshow star she could be..!

The scheme its in at the moment is pristine, so I'd say its just been repainted into these colours. Seeing as its been registered in Ghana I'd imagine that's where it'll soon be off to, Biggin Hill is known for Wessex restoration and maintenance and the airframes usually end up out Africa way!

The interesting question is what airframe is it? I have a feeling its Ex G-BYRC...

They have the contract from the Ghanaian Government to maintain them so it will be going back out there I expect

The Wessex served in Borneo, Aden, Ireland and the Falklands so that makes it a warbird in my mind.

Beat me to it - a warbird indeed, and what a classic aircraft!

What a fantastic machine. Never seen a Wessex in the air.

What happened to G-BYRC? IIRC that was on static at Biggin in 2010 - I thought it was being restored to fly in the UK?

Great photos Paul, I saw the Wessex that day flying close to Dunton Green.
I like your website too.

Is there anywhere to park and view aircraft at Biggin these days as things have changed a lot looking from main road. Where did you take these photos from?
