Weston Air Festival with Whirlwind Finale

Post by hairrig »

Enjoyable day on the beach on Sunday. Bit of a nail biting finish to the display but excellent work by the organisers and Bristol Airport to extend the licence. Well done to the VTTS engineers at Doncaster too!

Light and heat haze difficult at times but here is my take on the day.

Great photos.

I don't know where the Whirlwind is based, but I saw it flying near Ilminster on the Saturday morning (on it's way to Weston) and a colleague at work saw it at a very low level from the A30 between Chard and Crewkerne on the Sunday evening.

Bristol ATC informed the pilot of a Police helicopter flying near Weston on the Sunday morning that a Whirlwind was in the area, and the pilot asked if it was a Mk 10? ATC replied it was, to which the NPAS pilot replied that his neighbour was the pilot of the Whirlwind! I think the Police helo was from Exeter.

The Whirlwind is based on the outskirts of Crewkerne, and it regularly flies over my house!

I've just found out that this Whirlwind - XJ729, is the one that lived at Cricklade, Gloucestershire, back in the '90s, and was flying then too.

I've always wanted to see and hear what a Whirlwind sounds like, so I may possibly still get a chance some day...(Goes to check on Youtube.)
