Hyakuri AB - Heaven

Post by Mictheslik »

Hard to say anything more about this place than is available online. It's aeroplane heaven. Phantoms, F15s, T4s, all flying multiple sorties all day. Amazing locations, friendly locals, just a bit of a pain to get to!

No apologies for the number of photos.

Excellent shots! When were you there? I was there myself about a week ago. What a great base!

These are from 17th June...It's definitely one of the best places in the world for aircraft photography!

Great shots, as said from a great location. Somewhere I really want to go.

Few questions,

-Rough cost travelling from the UK?
-Time needed there?
-Anyone know how long the Japanese are keeping their F-4's?

Fantastic set

A couple of questions as I've got a slight chance of visiting next March:

1. How long does it take to get there from Tokyo?
2. Is anything likely to be happening on a Sunday, my only free day?
3. were your shots taken from a public location, and if so is that easily found when you're there?

Sorry to add to the questions, but want to make any necessary arrangements if I can

TIA

Andy

1. We had 17 days in Japan, including a week's train pass visiting Tokyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima. Mostly tourist stuff, but did a day at Hyakuri, Atsugi, Haneda and the airshow at Miho. All in, this came to £1700 including all spending money, flights and accommodation. Flew KLM from Manchester to Tokyo via AMS, and mainly used AirBnB to find cheap accommodation (there were 4 of us)

2. At each base, depends what's flying. A couple of days would be ideal to see most of the based aircraft, unless you're lucky like we were and everything flies in one day! For Japan itself, 2 weeks is a good bet.

3. Think they will start to be replaced by F35A from 2016. Could be wrong though.

1. Depends where in Tokyo you are and traffic. We stayed in Shinjuku and were quite fortunate with traffic, so it took just under 2 hours.

2. Probably not, but not sure.

3. Sort of. The morning location on the towers is private land, but you can pay the farmer 2000 Yen to access it (Access is difficult if not a Japanese speaker...we were fortunate that some local photographers were already there and the gate was open, but you can try asking the security guys who will come to take your passport details). The afternoon location was just a standard crash gate on a public road. A guide by Junji Sato is available here - http://jsa.world.coocan.jp/Japan_Spotte ... _Base.html . We did the peace gate towers in the morning, and point 3 in the afternoon.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks for your very helpful reply.

If a Sunday is doubtful, I don't think it's worth incurring the displeasure of 'er indoors. I might just play it safe and stick to a museum (or maybe two)!

Depends what the rest of your itinery is of course, but surely there's something you can swap on to the Sunday to free up a mid week trip

It really is worth it!

Great post of one of the best bases in Japan. Non stop action all day.

Nine months since I was there and would go back tomorrow if I could.
