Special schemes GB-1/48 Academy T33- Finished

Post by SvB »

Hello all,

This is the Academy 1/48 Lockheed T-33. I'll be building two of these. One of them in the colour scheme of Dutch demonstration team Whisky Four. The team started in 1956 flying Gloster Meteors, switching to the Lockheed T-33 in 1958. In 1965 two of the teams aircraft collided whilst performing at an airshow, killing two pilots. The team was disbanded after this tragic accident. The other aircraft I'll be building will be a trainer in the then standard Royal Netherlands Air Force colours, being overall natural metal with either yellow or orange dayglow identification bands on fuselage and wings.

I will not be using the kits decals:

This is where I am now. Both kits are coming along.

Tub installed in the fuselage:

Seats painted:

And installed:

Wings attached and first bit of paint going on.

This is the trainer-version with white sprayed in preparation for the orange dayglo on the nose and in front of the tail:

And this is the one one for this group build, the Whiskey Four T-33. White Ensign Models has a set of two tins of paint for this colour scheme, Jungle green and Aqua blue. Looking at pictures of the real aircraft, the Aqua blue (a very pale blue-grey colour) doesn't really seem to match,so I mixed in a lot of white and added a few drops of green:

The colour doesn't really show in this picture, but I'll be posting more soon once the jungle green is on.

The two of them together:

That's it so far for the T-33's.

Planning another build for this GB which I will start once the T-33's are finished:

Lovely clean works as usual sir and it's going to be interesting watching you paint that Tiger. How many colours are on that thing? :hypno:

Not my favorite aircraft, but you have done a mighty fine job sofar. I'm really looking forward to the F-5 your going to build. One of my all-time favorite aircraft. Have you chosen a kit for the F-5 yet? I would recommend the Kinectic kit if you have it. I bought one while at RIAT... I cannot wait to start building it.

A quick update. After a lot of masking and airbrushing the Whisky Four T-33 now looks like this:

There was a little bit of 'bleeding' of the darker Jungle green under the masking tape. Luckily I sealed the first, light blue-ish/green coat of paint with Klear, so the Jungle green was easily removed with a cotton bud soaked in turpentine.

Almost ready for the decals to go on.

That is just stunning mate.

I really like that scheme and the build itself is so clean.

Were there any fit issues etc with this Academy kit?

There were some fit issues. Especially where the back of the canopy meets the fuselage, that needed quite a bit of filling and sanding. But overall it's a nice kit. Not a lot of detail in the cockpit but that can be fixed using the available after market sets if you wish to enhance it.

The decals from Dutch Decal are quite nice and match the jungle green pretty well. They are very thin though and need careful handling. A few seconds in the water is enough to release them from the backing paper. Once they're on the model you need to position them as quick as possible, otherwise they will start breaking up as you move them. The only real problem is that the green shows through the roundels a bit on the edges. Once I find roundels of the same size and the same colour density I will lay them over the ones that are already on. That should fix it.

Work on the NF-5A has started, I'll be posting pics of that soon.

Crisp clean build you have there. I wasn't sure on the scheme before, but after seeing the finished build. It has grown on me. Well done!
