The difference between Farnbourgh and Paris?

Post by Unknown74 »

I've never been to a Farnborough Airshow but I have been to The Paris Airshow, apart from being in different Countries and both being Weekday Trade Shows and Weekend for Public are both Shows similar in any other ways?

One costs a lot of money for what you get when you consider the trip as a whole and takes many, many hours to get to...

...The other's in France? :dunno:

Both are soulless corporate affairs, go to RIAT instead

Have to say, it is a long time since I've been to any of those, but some differences that were there in the '90s or the first decade of this millenium:

- Paris has a museum that is available for a visit during the show
- The crowdline in Paris hardly gets to see an aircraft as they keep in front of the corporate chalets
- Paris gets more aircraft
- Security at Paris is even more a farce than at RIAT
- If you're unlucky with the weather, drinks will be sold out around the start of the public weekend at LBG (and no new fluids will arrive for the rest of the show).
A weather forecast is a forecast and just that

Having been to both many time..
Paris
more interesting aircraft on static but jammed in and awful for photos.
Flying display distant and short.
Eye watering prices for food and drink.
For me its a numbering crunching spotting visit, don't bother with a camera

farnborough
crowd line closer to runway and north facing
static still jammed in but less clutter than Paris
an easier, but smaller layout, less walking
food and drink slightly cheaper and much more of it
easier and quicker transport as we are out in the country and the commuter traffic will be going the other way.
As with Paris visit on Mon-Wed trade days, tickets can be purchased by anybody online.

For me Paris has a much busier, intense atmosphere, Farnborough is more relaxed.

From a photography point of view, whilst both have cramped statics, Farnborough is just slightly better. From a flying display point of view Farnborough is far better, having a much longer crowd-line which is much nearer the runway and with most of the chalets behind you on the "hill".

If you are going to Paris this year, I recommend the use of the grandstand at 14 Euros a day as the views get you above the high fence where you are herded into. It is normally sold out in advance. I will be there on the Friday and Saturday. I have seen aircraft at Paris such as Sukhoi,s and a few years ago the Comanche.

Also at Paris, the trade halls stays open at weekend unlike Farnborough and you also have free access to the museum on site

Hope this helps
Paul
