Folkstone Airshow

Post by Birderman »

I believe that Folkstone Air Display was cancelled this year (2015) due to lack of funds :

But I have just seen a post on FB giving a lineup for Sat 12th Sept. - but unable to find any other info apart from this news article earlier this year http://www.folkestoneherald.co.uk/REVEA ... story.html

can anyone confirm if there is going to be a display or not

TIA

Todays Herald has this:

http://www.folkestoneherald.co.uk/details-revealed-revamped-air/story-27721822-detail/story.html

Looking at the BBMF, Red Arrows, The Blades, RAF Falcons, Typhoon websites they make no mention of it, seems a strange way to run an event keeping thing quite until not more than a week before the event.

Seems like they may just be expecting some things to fly around/past in between other displays.... Seems like very little time to get things organised properly and understanding some the regulations the pilots would need to be practising their routines from around 30 days before the event....

Lack of advertising seems to imply they don't want the place to get packed out with tourists and enthusiasts..... but why ?

The newspaper sates BBMF but the BBMF website hasn't got it listed nor has the Typhoon, nor the Tutor or RAF Falcons.

The Tutor is at Old Sarum Airshow but might be able to do a pass on route to/from Capel Le Ferne.

The newspaper also states the RAF Falcons will climb to drop height escorted by two Spitfires... However the RAF Falcons website again has not got Folkestone listed.

Will be interesting if anyone goes to see what happens.

Anybody know if this is going ahead at all, tempted to head down but not sure if this is just media confusion?

Found this not that it is of much help...

http://www.folkestonetouristinformation.co.uk/events/shepway-airshow-2015-over-three-days-11-13-september/

"Shepway airshow 2015 plans take off!
The three-day event, which will be held across the district between September 11 and September 13, will include displays by Spitfires and Hurricanes – with other details AND Times yet to be confirmed.

And the airshow is being organised to mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain – with air displays by the likes of stuntmen ditched in place of war-winning crafts."

It's a bit odd this one, no publicity/Facebook page/web page, and not listed in the main airshow calendars either.

Didn't know it was even on, either they are really bad with their wider publicity or they only want it as an event for the local community.

Airborne to @LBH_Airport! Both #RedTail and #Camo. Which will display @Folkestone tomorrow at 1432? Will you be there to see it?

They seemed to want a low key event without all the circus I believe following the complaints from local traders/residents last time when 200,000 visitors apparently turned up with "no benefit" to the town. This was the other extreme with no trade stands and virtually no PR. Quite a few spectators on the Leas (despite the trees!) although hardly any on the beach. Was still a great little display in the sunny though rather windy weather, and felt very personal without the usual crowds.

No-one knew it was on, the most bizarre approach to an airshow I have ever seen.

Put on an expensive display, but not want to attract people to the town to see it, what really is the point of doing it then?

Odd :dizzy:

I went, but only because I have relatives live down there...
The show was as expected and lacked a lot of the atmosphere of properly arranged show.
The Typhoon was impressive (as usual)
BBMF was disappointing as only had the Spitfire
the parachutes were cancelled due to wind
quite spaced out program timewise, but the show was scheduled to be between 12:00 and 5:00pm but in reality it was between 2:00 and 4:30pm

Will post some pics soon, got to find time to process the Raw files before uploading....
