I'm in love with the helicopters myself. That brown and green camouflage is just pornographic. Superb set, hard to pick a favourite as there's so much exotic goodness going on.

Great set...

So many good images, and so many good colour schemes on show.

Why can't we have an air force like that ;-)

Very nice set Rich

Certainly looks like you got the variety you were after but the F15s and Blue F4 do it for me!

How did you get on with the food?!?

Wow, I've never seen so much :heyhey: :heyhey: in my life, this surely must now be "photo thread of the year" I've been invited to Aussie and to the USA in 2017, just the lure of all those JASDF F-4's  is calling to me

In all a FANTASTIC line up of photos, my favourite have to be the first two sunset photos in the first post

Nyutabaru Airbase is situated north from the city of Miyazaki, near Shintomi. If you enter the town by the Miyazaki expressway you will find the coastal road, the Hitosuba toll road which takes you to the north. The Hitosuba will converge into road number 10 and immediately after that you should turn into road number 14. This will lead you to road 219. After a few kilometers you can turn right to the 44 which will bring you to the base.

The whole base is packed with aircraft. Two squadrons of Eagles and one squadron with Phantoms are based here as well as support aircraft like Blackhawks and Mu-2's. What also makes this base very special is the presence of the Hiko Kyodotai, the Aggressor unit of the Japanese Air Force. This unit has 7 F-15DJ two-seat aircraft and one F-15J single seater. Special feature is that all eight of them are painted in a different, striking, color scheme.

Spotting Conditions

Only North end accessible, Wind really needs to be from the South so they are landing Runway 20

The old runway was replaced by a new parallel runway 1 km more to the east. Over portions of the old runway new building en platforms were constructed to enlarge the base capacity (2008-2012).
USN CAW-5 at Atsugi and a Marines KC-130sqn from Futenma will move to Iwakuni ... apparently photo opportunities have not improved since 2008.

That NE corner is base property, access is not a right. It is sometimes closed. There is a sign with a long list of rules in English and Japanese in the NE corner - facing you as you drive in before turning to park. Originally it said "no photography above the fences", next time I was there it said "no photography".

Last time we were also moved away from the crash gate on the west side. On previous visits the locals used to congregate right by it, now they kept back away long the access road. No idea if that was a legacy because of the protests which occurred when the Ospreys were delivered there, or if that is now permanent.

Gifu C-1/C-1FTB (X)C-2 F-2A/B F-4EJ/EJ Kai F-15J/DJ T-4 T-7

On this Air Base is the Air Development and Test Squadron of the Japanese Self-Defense Force. Also this the home of Kawasaki Heavy Industries Aeroplane division.
Gifu is located on top of hill and there are not many places where you can take good photo's. The best places are at ends of the runway and then about 100 meters in the field.
Most of the time there is not a lot flying going on, but now that there are testing the two new airplanes, the P-1 maritime patrol aircraft and the C-2 transport aircraft, there is the possibility for more flying.

ETC Card for toll roads

1. Always insert your ETC card all the way into the slot and remember the expiration date!

Securely insert your ETC card into the vehicle onboard device. Be sure to remember your ETC card expiration date.
If you forget to insert your ETC card or allow it to expire, the tollgate bar will not operate and you will have to stop the car.
2. Check which lanes allow ETC!

Before entering, check which lanes allow payment by ETC.
Be aware of ETC lane directions, signals, and signs as you proceed through the tollgate.
How to Pay the Expressway Toll
3. Do not exceed 20 km/h when entering the lane!

Enter at less than 20 km/hour and drive slowly through the ETC lane.
The ETC system requires that you enter at less than 20 km/hour and drive slowly through the ETC lane.
Carelessly entering the wrong lane or forgetting to insert your card can result in unforeseen delays such as preventing the tollgates from opening and closing and blocking the cars behind you. Therefore, to ensure the safety of yourself and others, please always reduce speed to less than 20 km/hour and drive slowly through the ETC lane.
4. Maintain a safe distance between vehicles!

Always maintain a safe vehicle distance when in the ETC lane
5. Be sure to check the roadside display monitor and the position of the ETC bar!

Drive slowly through the ETC lane and always check the roadside display monitor and the position of the ETC bar as you go through the lane.
6. You can also use the ETC lane at Exit tollgates.
What to do if the ETC bar does not open

Entrance
1. An attendant speaks to the driver through the intercom.
2. A toll pass ticket is issued, which you take from the green automatic ticket machine.
3. You cannot travel through the ETC lane at the exit.
Enter a general lane and hand your toll pass ticket and ETC card to the tollgate attendant.
Exit
1. An attendant speaks to the driver through the intercom. Please turn on your hazard lights and wait.
2. An attendant comes to the car. Please follow the attendant’s instructions.
3. Hand your ETC card to the tollgate attendant. The attendant will calculate your toll.
The attendant will ask you at what time and at which tollgate you entered the expressway.
Caution! Even if the tollgate bar does not open, never move your vehicle backwards.
Japan’s cherry blossoms are famous the world over, but the fall foliage in Kyoto is perhaps even more beautiful. Here’s our guide on how to see the Autumn Colors in Kyoto at it’s best.

Sentō-gosho Garden, Kyoto
While the cherry blossoms at their peak are almost excessively lovely, even tawdry in their obvious appeal, the fall foliage is a more restrained beauty that grows on you the more you look at it. And, while catching the cherries in peak blossom takes incredible luck (because they only peak for a few days a year), the fall foliage lasts up to two months.
When Is The Fall Foliage In Kyoto?
The leaves start changing in Kyoto sometime in October. The peak of fall foliage usually comes in mid-November, and you can usually see colors on the trees until mid-December. Thus, in an average year, the foliage season in Kyoto lasts from 15 October to 15 December, with a peak around 15 November.
Keep in mind that you can travel a bit in or near Kyoto to find good colors if you miss the peak in the center of the city. If you arrive too early, you can head up into the Kitayama Mountains to find trees that are already wearing their fall colors. Likewise, if you come too late, you can head to the south, to Uji, or even Nara, to see trees at their peak color.

The Best Places In Kyoto To See Fall Foliage
Kyoto is awash with good foliage spots. Almost every temple, shrine and garden has a few maple trees and other colorful trees scattered about. But, if you want to see some really eye-scorching color, it pays to head to one of Kyoto’s famed fall foliage spots – just don’t think that you’ll have it to yourself, as the Japanese love the fall foliage as much as they love the cherry blossoms (go early on a weekday morning to avoid the crowds).
Tofuku-ji Temple: The ravine on the north side of the compound here, spanned by three different bridges, is carpeted with maples that turn bright crimson in November. The view from the Hojo Garden here is superb in autumn.
Nanzen-ji Temple: The bright maples near the San-mon gate look beautiful above a carpet of moss.Ginkaku-ji Temple: This is one of Kyoto’s most beautiful gardens and there are plenty of maples here.
Honen-in Temple: The sight of the moss-covered thatched-roof gate here surrounded by crimson maple trees is one of Kyoto’s most iconic fall sights.
Takao: The mountain village of Takao has been one of Kyoto’s most famous foliage destinations for years and with good reason: the mountainsides are festooned with maples.
Okochi-Sanso Villa: This is one of Kyoto’s best gardens and it’s particularly lovely in autumn.

Places In Kyoto To See Fall Foliage Away From The Crowds
If you’d like to enjoy the colors without the crowds, try one of these spots:
Shinyodo Temple: The grounds of this superb temple contain several huge maple trees, as well as some fine gingko trees that turn bright yellow in October and November. Sure, some people come here, but not nearly as many as visit the nearby big-name temples. The Kyoto Gyoen (Imperial Palace Park): This place is huge, so no matter how many people show up to enjoy the colors, it won’t feel crowded.
Kurama-dera Temple: You can enjoy the fall colors from the train as you approach the mountain village of Kurama. Once there, you can walk through lovely forests to reach the mountainside temple. The colors here are usually lovely.
Daitoku-ji: The subtemples here have some wonderful maple trees within their walls and som of them do special openings to coincide with foliage season.

What a fantastic haul of images from many locations. My personal favourite is missing, the US1A or US2 Shin Maywa, but the rest make up for that!
Another quality trip with meticulous planning & execution following-on from the US. tour. Clear evidence that you could do worse than be a 'PRAT'....'Pittmans Radical Aviation Tours', It has a ring to it?

That's a mega post! some tremendous stuff here - is there a force that appeals more to the photographer than the JASDF? lovely.

Some really useful gen there too, thanks for posting. As if I'll ever get to use it!

(At least I can say I've seen the 125's - I've even seen one of them do a pairs display with a Mosquito - but it was in 'green' at the the time)
