I wouldn't call that lineup pathetic !! I am particularly looking forward to seeing the BBMF Lancaster Spitfire and Hurricane taking off from Blackpool Airport in the distance, from the end of Central or North Pier. Especially seeing the Lancaster with it's gear still down, then hopefully a three ship arrival from behind Blackpool Tower. The Chipmunk is a rare display item nowadays, I am looking forwards to seeing that too. Also the Global Stars Team and the Schweizer 300C 'Otto' Helicopter too, which are display items, which have never been seen at an Airshow in the Northwest of England. So clearly the organizers have thought about enthusiasts as well as the general public. I do hope the Airshow grows in stature, but I am really looking forwards to the Airshow :-) :-)

Looking forward to red arrows obviously, also looking forward to bbmf especially knowing the Lancaster is back and raf typhoon. Team raven and global stars will amaze people, the chipmunk will be nice to startup the airshow off

How dare they not cater just for that 5%!

I don't recall suggesting it should cater exclusively for the enthusiast, you read way too far into that - I'm fully aware of how it all works & simply meant they're pitching it at joe public & filling it with stuff like that I'm not particularly interested in seeing.

Anyway, apologies for having an opinion in 2106, how dare me :surrender:

Maybe Jason, The organizers have a limited budget, and would like to get more Diverse Aircraft, but simply can't afford it !? But as I say, I think the organizers have thought of the enthusiasts aswell, with rare display items like the Chipmunk and the Schweizer 300C 'Otto' Helicopter. It's not the biggest lineup, but it's very good for a free Airshow. I agree with you though, you are perfectly entitled to your own opinion about the lineup, as much as anyone else who goes on this forum.

eddywinch82 - I think they've got whatever they can get their hands on haven't they but there's certainly a mix. Personally I go for the military assets so in years gone by either here or at Southport we'd have a Chinook, Black Cats, JP, Hunter (they're no doubt still off limits), parachute team. Just seems to be lacking but that's probably down to the times we live in as much as anything else.

I agree a Classic Jet would be nice. I remember a few years ago at Blackpool Airshow, Hunter Miss Demeanour displaying, it would have also been nice to see B17 Sally B display again, which was one of the highlights of the Airshow last year. The Strikemaster which is displaying this year, is a civilian Jet Provost I believe ?

Dreadful line-up, even by Blackpool's dismal standards. And even for 2016. As has been said above, it's purely a case of filling the show with as many cheap acts as possible.

Still, the general public will turn up, drink their tins of lager, eat their candy floss and it'll be more of the same in 2017...

It's a civilian operated example of the Strikemaster, which was the armed attack type based on the JP that had some success on the export market. Mark Petrie's Strikie is an ex-Oman Air Force jet, and wears those markings accordingly

Depends.
There are 3 proper Strikemasters still flying on the UK register thatI know of ( unless they've changed recently ) : G-MXPH , G-RSAF & G-SOAF

I wold totally agree with that. Seeing as Blackpool like to think of themselves as the number 1 UK seaside resort they could do a lot better, you only have to look at Bournemouth and what they can do as a free show, even Southport only charge around £7, I'm sure there's plenty more examples. I live about 45 mins drive from Blackpool and I don't think they've ever made me feel like wow I must go this year. Southport on the other hand, this year I'll be there both Friday night and Sunday.

Surely Bournemouth and Southport do it, to create the busiest ( or one of the busiest ) weekends of the year.

Blackpool will be busy every weekend, mainly down to the sun being out, rather than any other 'attraction'. There will be more people coming to Blackpool that weekend for the Punk Festival than to specifically watch an airshow -- so therefore why do they need anything more than The Reds, the BBMF and a Typhoon -- that alone is good enough for a free airshow for the people, most of whom will be in Blackpool that weekend anyway, airshow or no airshow.

If the airshow was at Squires Gate or at Stanley Park Aerodrome ( now the Zoo ) both of which were airshow locations in the past, then you would need a better line-up to get the crowds ( and you would have to charge them ).

I would suggest the 'annual Blackpool Airshow since 1909' claim is more of a reason that Blackpool still has some sort of airshow annually, more than trying to get people to come to Blackpool -- which will happen anyway if the weather is nice -- so it is done as cost effectively as possible.

EDIT -- and another thing, most of these 'specials' like the Airshow, Red Arrows display at Pleasure Beach in May, World Fireworks Championships, etc, are actually heavily attended by locals ( Blackpool has a population of 145,000+ [ one of biggest towns in the North West ], which rises to 200,000+ if you take the rest of the Fylde Coast and a lot of these go to the 'specials' -- and their council tax pays for most of these 'specials' anyway. ) - I think I am fishing a sea match about a mile away from the Airshow this year on the Sunday -- so will probably go fish that and watch the airshow from there ( and walk down from home with my granddaughter on the Monday - like loads of other Blackpool residents ).

And Swansea.....who had crowds of over 200,000 this year despite the weather not exactly being brilliant.

Totally agree it's pants this year compared to last year. They were able to afford the Vulcan last year and 'Sally B'. The piers will however be open, but the display line is pushed back another 100m i'm led to believe.

Avoided the Vulcan last year?

I don't think so...it took me 4 hours to get there from Chester and we just arrived in time to see it coming in and displaying! It was the main reason we went!

50/50 on going this year.

I think Chris G, meant to say "afford" rather than "avoid". So the display line has been pushed back 100 meters ? I thought as the display is over the sea, the post Shoreham rules are different for display flying ? I may be wrong though ! So I will definately be watching the Airshow, from the end of Central or North Pier again.

Don't tell anyone but my friend who flys a PA-28 out of Blackpool Airport was saying The Reds had rang him up about flying in formation with him next weekend.

He was on his 5th pint though.

See my response last weekend, I think the chances are very slim. The organisers probably think they've already got plenty in, which as you'll see in my posts differs to my thoughts!

To be honest , the flying line up is already arranged and sorted. There will probably be no additions as this would impact the existing running order.

The local council don't pamper for aircraft enthusiasts/aircraft photographers , they are only interested in entertaining the rank and filed masses of " joe public" , the majority wont be bothered what or which aircraft are flying as long as a show is put on

Remember this is a free airshow so the organiser will be happy with what they can get for limited funds available.

As the airport is less busy since re opening , the powers that be , obviously cannot figure out that they could actually have a limited display at the airport , make use of the grass areas to park cars , and make some cash ! Yes the fire coverage on a normal day is low but it can be upped for one off events if you put you hand in your pocket and subsidise it ..... just needs some planning

Does anyone have inside info on where the Typhoon/Reds will base from this weekend & if so, any times?

Reds haven't updated their transit times for a few weeks (I think they've been on leave this week) & the Typhoon twitter pages have been quiet too.
