Abingdon Air & Country Show 2017

Post by Oldtower »

Ok Ladies & Gents - Planning started back in August for our 2017 "AACS" supporting the Thames Valley Air Ambulance Trust once again. I am concentrating on some new ideas for the show not least the layout if I can.

However we are looking at trying to secure a few newer 'Country Show' attractions which is actually quite difficult not least the cost, however I am pleased to announce the first two Flying Display acts as follows:

1. Westland Wasp Anti Submarine ex Royal Naval Helicopter - Terry Martin
2. The UK mainland debut of the CAC Boomerang 1940s Australian fighter bomber - Remko Sibjen.

Please do keep your eyes on this thread as we go along.

The show is Sunday 14th May (a normal weekend), and we are on facebook, twitter and http://www.abingdonairandcountry.co.uk

Wasp is a good start.

Unless the Boomerang is going very cheap, can't help but think there's much better value for money located on these shores though?

Considering there are no Boomerangs in the UK, and other than Jersey, one has not been to the UK for an awfully long time - if ever - I'd suggest it's worth whatever money it costs!

You're right, I'm sure it will be parked fine and the camera shutters will wirr-away in unison. :hypno:

The prospect of the Boomerang at Abingdon means that for the first time I must find time to fit the show into my schedule. A single piston engine fighter type I've never seen anywhere, booked to fly for the first time at a UK airshow - fantastic news.

It's a tidy display too. Tight turns, rolls but no vertical aeros (not sure much registered on the topside count, if that's your thing). It was pulling some nice vapour streamers at Florennes. Got a nice guttural radial rumble to it. :joystick:

Am I the only one who has just noticed the date change? Always clashes with another event so glad it has moved. Does this normally sell out in advance or can I pay on the day??

Yes,the date has been put back 2 weeks for 2017,partly in the hope of better weather but also to (hopefully) reduce the risk of pre-booked flying display acts cancelling at the last minute through not finishing their winter maintenance/early spring practise(something we've been affected by quite a bit over the past few years)

We've never yet had a sell-out purely on Advance Tickets so you will(as near as can be guaranteed) be able to pay on the day...having said that,if it should look like approaching an Advance sell-out we will announce it here and on our Facebook page as soon we can to give as much notice as possible

Couple of nice additions, Bob Grimstead in his RF-4 Redhawk motor glider and the mighty AN-2 from Popham.

A long way off I know however Dalton Barracks and Abingdon airfield were announced to be closing in 2029 and more than likely sold for housing as part of the defence cuts yesterday.

Make the most of this superb event while you can :-(

It's for one hope it is still running in 2029 and can be moved.

Thanks Boff - its an estimated 'close date' for the base... and we will as long as the Army / Defence Estates and more importantly money allowing will be continuing as long as possible.
Even after 2029 I will be looking to piece something together to try save part of the site as a Heritage Showground / few buildings like Bicester airfield - well that's an idea but plenty of time to look at that.
