A very 'special' SPTA visit!

Post by Disaster Area »

I paid my first ever visit to Everleigh Dz on Salisbury Plain on Wednesday 14th Sept, I don't think it will ever get any better than this day!

When I arrived on the SPTA there was a pair of Middle Wallop Apaches already using Everleigh Dz

A chinook joined them for a quick crew change

Then they all departed and made space for the main event, the arrival of the 3 specially marked Chinooks for a 30 minute photoshoot!

The formation had flown down to the south coast and around the Isle of Wight area and given those at Middle Wallop a nice flypast prior to arriving at Everleigh.

Not forgetting the Lynx photoship that accompanied them!

A truly memorable, never to be repeated event.

Why are the intakes different on the engines on the first Chinook?

The newer Chinook models have a filtration system to remove FOD (PureAIR system) this is the flat fronted cylindrical cover. The conical cover is the normal intake cover/screen seen on most Chinooks

Don't know if it's relevant but that one's a Mk6, the others are Mk 4s.

The engine intake filters you see on the Mk 6 are called EAPS - engine air particle separators and are a role fit to any mark of UK chinook. They are basically a sand filter. Ordinarily the cone shaped screens that are usually fitted have a very fine mesh which stops larger particles but not so fine as to catch sand. Great shots by the way.
