Im thinking I should give Ace Combat a chance, I know it's no simulator, but it looks fun - do I need to play any of the previous games to understand the story?

I've only played AC6 and Assault Horizon and neither had anything to do with the other.

AC6 (as with AC7) is set in a fantasy world.
AH is set in the real world.

I understand AC4, X and 6 were set in the same universe a few years apart but you don't need to know the back story to get into it. No idea if 7 will be too.

It's no simulator but it is fun.

I thought the flying on Ace Combat 4,5 and 6 were very good.
I thought AH and Infinity were awful, it was like playing Hawx.
Hoping this is a complete re-vamp!

Agreed. Just need to decide on what platform I get it now...

But this looks like a proper strangereal, anime, Japanese level ace combat. Perfection.

Played a demo at Comicon on VR - It is f*****g awesome! It was so immersive, the demo started off with B52's crashing all over the place, absolutely surreal!! (sorry for the expletive but! )

Waiting for my copy to arrive, can be anytime up until 9pm tonight.

I'm a little disappointed that the VR content is only 3hrs long and separate from the main campaign/story.

Would have been superb if VR mode had been available for the full game.

Xbox version here - it's good fun. Not a simulator, obviously. But the best thing available on consoles for us and it doesn't look too bad. Story is classic AC, so no problem there.

Gutted, hate the handling all feel so stiff. AC6 was much better.

I've not tried the other setting, so that might be what you're describing? But make sure you've got the control setting set to 'Expert' for a more natural movement of the aircraft.

Had a quick go last night, expert mode is certainly the way to go.

It's classic Ace Combat and the VR mode is short but oh so sweet, I sincerely hope they release a full VR campaign as DLC as it is brilliant.
