RAFM Hendon 2017 *UPDATE 06Apr17*

Post by Pen Pusher »

There are a lot of changes going on at Hendon at the moment as the Museum prepares for the Centenary of the Royal Air Force in 2018. The BoB hall is in the process of being emptied, although the Sunderland is staying, with some of the fighters making it into the main buildings with others going to Cosford and the large Luftwaffe aircraft due to appear in the North London daylight in the very near future through holes cut in the side of the old BoB hall. Access from the Milestones of Flight to the main buildings is cut off, the covered walkway tent has finally gone, with the land at the rear being cleared and made ready for what could be storage, access space. The FSM Spitfire and Hurricane Gate Guards are down from their perches and are going to Cosford for a bit of TLC before returning to Hendon.

Our staff and contractors have been very busy today, moving the last of the aircraft out of Hangar 1, ready for its transformation as part of our Centenary Plan. Here the Ju-88 is lifted onto a truck ready for its move up to RAFM Cosford.

Apart from the Sunderland, all the aircraft were moved out of the former Battle of Britain Hall last Thursday. The Bolingbroke IV, Stuka and He.111 fuselages are stored temporarily in Milestones and the Bf.110 fuselage is snuggled up against the Lancaster rear fuselage. Due to major landscaping works about to take place, there is limited parking at the site. There is a high fenced corridor from the road entrance to the hard car park outside Milestones and the gravel car park outside the Grahame-White hangar. If going by car, get there for doors open for a decent parking space. Photos in the order taken.

The most noticeable change, amongst the landscaping that is going on outside, is that the concrete gate and pedestrian arches at the main entrance have been demolished. Inside, the former BoB Hall aircraft that were in Milestones have been moved out into the main building and the Buccaneer and Typhoon that were in the main building have now been moved into Milestones. The Heinkel is having its wings reattached and the former BoB Hall fighters have been moved into a nice little star display opposite the Lancaster. In the order taken.

Thanks for that very interesting update Brian. Looks like half the collection were partly dismantled and look forward to making a visit when it's all in place. No doubt you'll be first there with another update?
