Nikon D7100

Post by jingernut »

Looking at possibly purchasing a new camera to replace a bridge one I currently have.

Have been looking at the Nikon D7100 as this seems a well regarded camera. Just wanted to know what people opinions of it were seeing as it's now a few years old.

It's right at the top end of my budget when I have paired it with a Tamron 18-270mm lens (which seems to be a good all rounder) but didn't know what else would be considered as an alternative body that's maybe newer (or if that even matters)?

My main use of it would be for family / travel / landscape etc. Taking it to airshows would only be a secondary consideration and I would hire a lens for those occasions.

Cheers

I have one of these and I really like it. Having upgraded from an entry level D3200, I find it to be nice to hold in the hand, with plenty of options with which to mess up my photos. The focusing is really quite good with a fair few points covering the viewfinder. I am also quite fond of the dynamic range on this camera, it is rather good.

It is well documented that it produces banding when recovering shadows, however this only really happens at about +5EV, which in reality is a non-issue. The buffer is quite small if firing off a burst, however I've not yet run out of space in my 2 or so years of owning the camera.

Having recently paired mine with the Nikon 200-500mm lens, I am now re-learning a lot of the camera's capabilities and overall, I am very impressed.

My only real gripes with the camera are that it is a total faff to change the ISO and it doesn't do enough to compensate for bad technique.

Sony, are the top for price and advanced features,
Plus with its in built stabilising system, means any lens you have is stabilised.

Sony, top bit of kit. Its why Nikon use Sony sensors.

Except in the D7100 and D7200 (Toshiba), D700, D800/810 (Nikon), and D4 and D4s (also Nikon)

I've owned the D7100 since 2014 and apart from the noise at high ISO's I really can't fault it. I also have the D7200 as well but to be honest it's only a very minor upgrade. Apart from airshows I use it mainly with either the Nikon 70-300 & 16-85 and I'm very pleased with the results

I also own an D7100.
I used it with a Sigma 150-500 and now for 1 year with a 150-600 Sport.

I am quite happy with it, although I confirm the short buffer issue (5/7 images only in RAW before it switches to low speed) : a real pain for synchro passes.
I added a Meike grip that hosts a second battery and eases vertical shots (less useful for airshow photos, except for static).
It is quite well protected against water protection : useful for airshows in the UK  or rather for shooting from sailboats in Britanny as I do also.
ISO settings can be done using the front or rear wheel, also it is not well documented.

You can have a look on the results on my Flickr gallery.
