MoD says 2017 'Year of the Navy'

Post by Burleysway »

This year will be the start of a “new era of maritime power” for Britain, as the Royal Navy’s new aircraft carrier leaves its shipyard and begins sea trials, the Defence Secretary has said. Sir Michael Fallon said: “2017 is the start of a new era of maritime power, projecting Britain’s influence globally and delivering security at home.”

Makes interesting reading. I hope Sir Michael and the MOD are right ? I cant wait to see the first carrier on the move.

Will it be more mechanically reliable than the Daring class? That's the important question?

Great. And when are the F-35s going to be operational? Until then the carrier is about as much use as wind down windows on a submarine.

This is the same Royal Navy that has mortgaged its surface fleet to pay for these two carriers? The same Royal Navy that now uses Royal Fleet Auxiliaries for duties that previously would have used a frigate or a destroyer?

Putin must be quaking in his boots. Unless it's another Royal Navy we're talking about.

Totally agree with your comments on mortgaging the fleet for Carriers that are so large - with the F35s did they need to be so big.
Re Putin - I don't think the Russian Northern Fleet (subs aside) are anything to worry about from a NATO perspective. Nor should we worry about the Kutznezov which seems not to being used as an Aircraft Carrier at the moment as it is not fit for purpose.
Not trying to be too lax about Russia but its Navy (subs aside) isn't a threat. I would be happier to see our Posiedon`s in service rather than the Aircraft Carriers tbh.

As it stands , the RFAs are about the only ships that are routinely fully-manned.....the RN are suffering such a recruitment & retention shortfall that your average RN warship is operating below complement in all departments( some crewing branches have an overall shortfall of around 10-20% )
All well & good having these wonderful ship-building schemes , but they're pointless if you can't man them.
It shows how bad it is when they're trying to attract ex-Army & RAF ( or those about to leave ) techies , etc. to re-trade & re-badge as RN engineers

One can only hope so. Time will tell.

At least QE is being delivered on time and on budget.

I seem to recall reading something just before Christmas indicating that USMC F-35Bs will be operating from her in the interim. Not ideal, but at least they can get the trials done and dusted with their support. I understand that USMC aircraft will embark on the USS Wasp for their first operational cruise later this year, so they're a bit ahead of us.

Correct, althought we may have a unit if AV-8B+'s thrown in has well.

Has for the USMC and their F-35B's....they are miles in front of us. a friend's youngest son was hoping to get onto the F-35B Lightning FG1 but will have to settle for a tour on the Typhoon FGR4 before he "might" get a sniff of a DAVE.

...but not too powerful! We need to keep relations with Italy and Turkey sweet, otherwise the F-35s won't be getting serviced. :wall:

HMS Queen Elizabeth just about finished with the vessel planned to sail on sea trials next month.

She does look great, you can hardly see the 2 massive Ainsclough cranes on her flight deck.

After nearly a decade of construction, Britain's biggest ever warship will set sail for the first time today.

navy's new aircraft carrier sets sail today

Post by craig.mason »

Royal Navy's largest ever warship, HMS Queen Elizabeth, to set sail
After eight years, the Royal Navy's newest aircraft carrier is to set sail from the Rosyth dockyard where she was built.
what's the point in having an "aircraft" carrier if there are no planes to fly off it????
Maybe if they should have kept the harrier force until the f-35 comes into service they would have a fully operational carrier strike force

Never understood 'Call Me Dave' Cameron's rush to get rid of the Harrier force just after hundreds of millions had been spent on servicing them. Either you need the capability operationally in which case you keep the Harriers until the F-35 is sorted; or if you are getting rid of the Harriers because you don't require that capability then why are you ordering F-35s?

Ordering 2 massive aircraft carriers just smacks of Cold War sabre rattling.

We are 11 months ish from F-35 arrival at Marham. Without being scrapped in 2010, the Harriers OSD was meant to be 2017 / 2018. So they likely would never have seen the deck of QE anyway

Maybe the aircraft carrier needs to conduct sea trials and the crew need to get used to how everything works before they add the extra danger of having aeroplanes operating on it?

There is the issue of maritime operation and fast-jet pilot currency but luckily some of this has been allowed to continue through our friends across the water.
