IAT 1974

Post by IanC »

Pushing back a bit earlier in time, some scanned slides from IAT 1974 at Greenham Common, 6th July 1974. The highlight has to be the flying KC-97:

Lovely stuff, remember seeing " The Black Knight" at Sleap airshow many years ago.

What a delightful set Ian - some of the best shots I've seen of this event. The flyers in particular. In fact everything!

I was slowly scrolling down thinking that here was an oldies set where absolutely every airframe/scheme is from a bygone era and than we come to the Austrian 105 - still going strong looking exactly the same and in the flying display this year! :-)

Ormond Hayden-Baillie is a legend of the airshow world. Never had the privilege of watching him display myself but his displays were reputed to be ones you wouldn't forget.

Great set

Fantastic stuff Ian, the KC-97 really is the star, but great to see some images of some really rare IAT appearances with the C-118 and C-121 and that lovely FAA Convair

many thanks.

Great set, sadly I was only 4 at the time.Would have loved to see the KC-97,C-118, C-121 and Convair. That really was the end of the propliner era. Wasn't there supposed to be a C-124 present, just months before retirement, but they found wing cracks the week before and they were all grounded IIRC?

Missed these being posted as I was on my way to NTM at Landivisiau on Sunday, presumably where the French Navy F-8 flew in from. And yes Wrexham Mackem, there were Austrian Saab-105s there still going strong!
Also the Belgian SF-260 is still in service.
Some great types to be seen, some of them regulars at my local of the time - Northolt.
Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the memories  - I was there but took regrettably few photos  or if I did I've mislaid them - which is worse!

Yes indeed, a great set. I particularly remember the KC-97... Had my first ever flight that year too in an Air Anglia DC-3.....
On a more sombre note here's a few photos from the tower of the airfield as it is now, mind you still with a part of the runway and taxi intersection (right by where the FIAT enclosure was) still there. There have certainly been some exotic wheels rumbling down there over the years that's for sure In one shot you can see the GAMA site (which is still off limits due to the owners' obstinacy..). These photos only give you small taster of how it is now. Thanks for looking.
BTW, the tower should be open for the public early next year finances and manpower permitting.
For a really good view try these drone views... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Pmp-DBGtbA
