35th anniversary AWACS Geilenkirchen

Post by StianFlanker »

On 1 and 2 July, there will be a static display at Geilenkirchen AB, Germany.
For those who want to see flying aircraft, there will be a spottersday on the 30th of June.
Current participants are: Hungarian Saab Gripen, Romanian C-27J Spartan and 2x Hellenic F-4E Phantoms.
This is all I know, and please don't be too rude on my English, I'm 13 years old and Dutch

Thanks. Is it just me or does that seem a bit odd? I've not been to Geilenkirchen before but was tempted.

After the Frecce Tricolori crash at Ramstein in 1988, almost no airshow with a flying display happened anywhere in Germany. Probably the same reason why there is only a static display at Geilenkirchen (which is a shame  )

Ah yes, of course. Having been to an airshow at Bitburg I thought that only applied to the Luftwaffe. Thanks very much.

I did this ten ( :dizzy: ) years ago for the 25th anniversary, and it was absolutely superb. The arrivals day was a bit like a RIAT Thursday with a whole sequence of fantastic movements, culminating in a B-52 touching down!

I probably won't make this, but if others are in a position to then it should definitely be on your watchlist.

They've been drastically reduced but plenty have occurred. Both German shows I've attended at Hopsten in 2001 and Manching in 2007 had full air displays. ILA Berlin still happens and many other shows have had full displays.

As Skyflash says the previous anniversary show at Geilenkirchen was also static only, more of a meet than an airshow.

Spent a week there back in the early nineties, gathering info from the USA AWACS team to help with various problems whilst 8 Squadron E-3D's were being readied for service in the UK. Lovely place to visit and remember having lunch at the Frisbee Club every day, washed down with a pint of Warstiener (wobbly). These were great times to be in the RAF. We were booked on BA and when we went to the booking in desk, were told that the flight had been overbooked and that we were to fly with Luffthansa and were upgraded to business class because of their mess up. One and only RAF trip in business class, luxury.

As previously announced, this year the NATO E-3 Component will celebrate its 35th anniversary with a cultural festival. During that festival there will also be a static display of aircraft, including a mini Tigermeet fly-in. The cultural festival is limited open to the public. In order to give spotters and aviation enthusiasts the opportunity to take pictures of the fly-in of the participating aircraft, a spottersday will be held on the 30th of June 2017.

Check the component anniversary Facebook site frequently to be updated on the Aircraft expected.

We have been able to re-negotiate the entrance fee, and there is some good and bad news in it. The bad news is that the ticket price will be 35 Euro, the good news is that we only have 35 Euro tickets!

Registration is only possible as a group, minimum of 10 persons. As of the 1st of May 00.00 local GK time, we will have the following e-mail address activated, and we will take your requests on a “first come, first serve” basis:

--------------------------------
31-3-2017 UPDATE
We are full for now we are talking to thebase commander to get more places.

Really strong static line-up for this. Anyone doing the spottersday? Really keen but needs to be groups of 10 for registration!

If anyone's interested in the spottersday then drop me a PM and hopefully we can get a big enough group for registration.

Edit: group is now full.

Stand-outs are the Greek Phantoms, Polish SU-22 and MiG-29, and Italian Navy Atlantics...
