RIAT 2018 discussion

Post by aviodromefriend »

As the first day of this show will be about to be finished within 1 year, 1 week and 1 day from now, it is not too late to open this thread (I hope).

Dates are July 13, 14 and 15, according to airtattoo.com.

There will probably be some weather of any kind.

It clashes with Bastille Day in France, so there is a danger the Patrouille de France might have to not participate.

One of the themes will feature 100 years of RAF or whatever name will be thought out for that.

Of course DBH will be around during the upcoming year to challenge some (if not all) of these remarks.
A weather forecast is a forecast and just that

I hammer feeling it'll be a good one. (shot) put money on it in fact. Maybe they'll get a Javelin flying again? I'm sure the Pole(vaults) will be there.

Is that enough? :-P

Planning for 2018 started some years ago, I believe. The central theme is RAF 100 - I expect it to see significant contribution worldwide, the likes the Air Tattoo hasn't seen for a number of years.

Edit: Full 3 day show?

I'm certainly aware of Tim Prince standing up and saying at a FRIAT forum in 2014 that meetings had begun and RIAT had already been chosen as the official celebration show.

After the difficulties I've had this year finding a hotel thanks to a wedding booking my entire "usual" hotel for RIAT weekend 18 months in advance (grrrrh, I've already booked my "usual" for 2018 :-)

With Fairford due to have a lot of work in preparation for the RC-135 throughout 2018 there is of course the possibility that the runway may not be operational in July, and DBH may well be putting together a contingency plan in case that happens.

I predict people will post the same information over and over again, despite it already having already been posted numerous times.
I predict people will ask the same questions over and over again, despite them already being answered numerous times.
I predict at least three topics will be started to discuss what the weather will be like.
I predict at least half a dozen topics will be started for each of the following -- where to camp, how to get there, what to do there & what camera/lens combination to use.

I predict that the number of "Meh"s in this thread will break all previous records.......
nothing is confirmed at a show until its u/c hits the tarmac or it is running in for its display.....

I'm worried that the static display is looking a little thin.

I'm not one to usually spread rumours but I have it on good authority the Royal Jordanian Falcons have confirmed. Cannot wait! Due to planned toilet breaks I've not seen them for years.

But that will be easily beaten by the number of "Best update ever"/"best RIAT ever" happy-clapper type posts for every single update no matter how mundane the item or how often it's been there.

My accomodation is already booked too - this is getting silly.

As for the static I'd like to see a return of the display that was put on in 2003 for the 100th anniversary of flight when many museum airframes were brought in. I'd also hope for a lot of Commonwealth a/c as many of those countries stood with us in the dark days of the 2 world wars.

And also by then, Boris Johnson might be leader of the Conservatives and our PM. Can you see a pattern forming there?

Our fat man with a silly haircut is the odd one out, though, as he wants to declare war on a skinny man without a silly haircut.

It's a genus of snail as well.
Or from an aviation perspective, wasn't it also a glider make/model ?

I believe that would be a duo discus.
