Malta 2017

Post by farnboroughrob »

Hi guys looking for some advice for a possible trip next year. This is going to be combined with a family holiday staying in Valetta. Im more of a spotter than photographer so was wondering a few things. On Friday is there any access to the based static aircraft (Maltese military and based light aircraft?) or is it just a runway enclosure? From the airport static what sort of view do you get of the rest of the airport, are you near the military hangars? The flying display site will not be far from our hotel, how busy does it get, how early do you have to get there. Any other tips appreciated?
thanks
Rob

Generally, not on Friday. The static area is usually confined to the area north of runway 05 and west of runway 13 - on the ASPs either side of the Lufthansa hangar (which is marked on google maps). It is not close to the military hangars or the terminal building. You would see scheduled civil traffic in between display aircraft slots. I don't think there has been any statement about where the flying display will be next year. For a number of recent years it has been at the airfield, but this year it was over the sea to the south of Valetta. It has also been held in St Pauls's Bay.

Thanks for that, I will probably give the Friday a miss then and just attend at the weekend. I won't be allowed more than one visit to the static anyway. For now I am assuming the flying will be at the same place as 2016 at 'smart city' just east of Valletta?

Possibly - it was only there because of an issue this year with the airfield - it has been at the airfield for the previous 7 or 8 years.

hi guys. Whilst ive never been to the Airshow, going from what i read in their papers and from friends i have over there. If its anything like this year. The air display is over Smart City to the south of Valletta. In the morning they have static open at Luqa then you were bussed over to Smart City.

Some of the guys on here did go so they could confirm.

If you havent been to Malta before its a great place. Make sure you can visit the War Museum at Fort St Elmo in Valletta and the Aviation Museum at Ta qali.
There is a maritime Museum in one of the 3 cities ( south side of grand harbour) Fort Rinella, The Lascaris War rooms are an absolute must too.

There is plenty more to see. Hope you have a great time.

You're absolutely right Andy. The static & flying were held at different locations. Not sure if transport was laid on or if punters had to make their own way.
I can also wholeheartedly recommend the places listed above.

I was at this years airshow and can confirm the two venues. To my knowledge you had to make your own way to Smart City, at least it was the choice that I made. I spent a couple of hours at the airfield then returned to Valletta for a bite to eat and then a bus to Smart City.

After the problems the organisers had with this years show, let´s hope that there will be a show in 2017..........

Sorry guys i was going on what the Malta Times said. and the reason why they arent doing it at the airport is 2 things, shoreham and last year on one of the annual presidential charity motorshow one of the supercars went out of control right into the crowd, So due to that they changed the venue to Smart city.

You are right about getting something to eat in Valletta, I go to the La Vallette social club on Republic street, foods great, beer is cheap... what else do you need.

"Safety precautions have always been taken but the show was always dogged by complaints about noise from people bordering the airport."

Ahha, they have those in Malta as well.

Info from the organizers posted on Facebook: Static at Luqa, flying at Smart City again, so a repeat of the 2016 setup.
