Looking for a good travel bag zoom lens

Post by Jonesy »

I've been out of the photography scene for so long, I don't know what's any good.

I'm after a zoom lens for my Nikon d300 with a range up to 300mm and compact enough to go into my hand luggage. I'll be using it for mainly shooting warbirds either static or taxiing with a little bit of shooting them in flight.

What's out there?

Neil.

Never used them, but the Nikkor 18-300/3.5-5.6 VR or 18-300/3.5-6.3 VR seem like the kind of lenses you're after.

I have had both - they can be a little soft at the long end.

There's also a new Tamron out..18-400mm. There's a review here: https://www.dpreview.com/news/4580371302/tamron-introduces-ultra-telephoto-18-400mm-f3-5-6-3-zoom-lens

I think any lens which covers that focal range will have limitations.

What about the Nikon 70-300mm VR? Any good?
