Canon EF 100-400 L Series II USM

Post by alans895 »

Hello,

I apologise in advance if this question has been asked already. Should I use IS Mode II or III when photographing moving aircraft at shows?

Regards,

Alan

I, rather stupidly, decided to experiment with Mode III at Flying Legends, with very poor results...

What was I thinking?

To expand on my answer a little...

I don't think there is any inherent reason why Mode III would be bad. However, in Mode III stabilisation is not active and visible through the viewfinder. For me personally I'm not a very steady lens holder so I think I need to see the stabilisation in action in order to work with it and work on being as steady as I can.

I've had excellent results with Mode II on this lens so not really sure in retrospect why I felt the need to start using Mode III, hence - What was I thinking?!

I always use Mode 3 and have never had any problems.

"Canon's newest IS mode, previously provided only on super telephoto lenses, is the designed-for-tracking-action Mode 3 IS. In Mode 3, image stabilization is active and ready for use the moment the shutter releases, but actual stabilization is not in effect until that precise time. The view seen through the viewfinder is not stabilized, and you are able to follow your erratically-moving subjects without fighting against image stabilization designed to prevent you from doing the same. IS Mode 3 is designed to detect panning motion and, when detected, will only apply stabilization at right angles to the direction of the detected movement (like IS Mode 2)."

I use mode III on my 100-400 II and 300 2.8 II lenses.
Works better than the older mode II I think. I have a lot more keepers on low shutter speeds now.

Nothing wrong with using Mode 3,i've always used it.
Never had any problems with it in this mode,in fact it's more natural to me having it in this mode, has you can just shoot away without the image in the viewfinder stabilising up,which I've always been distracted by.
