Vintage & Not So Vintage Compton

Post by Disaster Area »

Picturesque Compton Abbas Airfield in rural Dorset hosted a vintage aircraft fly in on the 12th August. The event was well attended by aircraft of various degrees of 'vintagery'!

Below are some of the many images I took in no particular order

Very good. It was well worth waiting for the sunny afternoon, didn't get the camera out until after lunch. Agree about the Texan, one of the best around. Also good to see the two Stearmans.

I was there with SWMBO and we got fed up with the lack of 'vintage' aircraft that had turned up by 1230 and the overcast skies and wind, so left, considering that if anything 'vintage' can't turn up by mid-day for a 'Vintage DAY', then they might not have bothered. The based Stinson Reliant in the hangar was u/s with a starter motor failure and didn't venture outside while we were there, which was also disappointing as 'three Stinsons' were advertised.

You should have stuck around and waited for the sun to come out! Didn't cost anything (except for petrol) which is rare nowadays.

If the chap that I spoke to in the afternoon views this site I was wrong about the Harvard/Texan being a Canadian built example. It is in fact a Texan SNJ-5. Think I was getting confused with the Harvard that is now based at Old Warden.
