Help with ID please

Post by Jetnoise »

A bit of a long shot, but can anybody identify this aircraft - it looks like an A-26 but I can not relate the markings with any known A-26 operator? The photo was taken in 1986 at Chino - the aircraft was in one of the storage areas that were dotted around at that time.

Any help most appreciated.

Cheers,
Ralph

Thanks for that - I concur that it is an A-20, but not the one currently at Pima (43-21709) - that one was recovered from PNG and was still in faded USAF markings and without wings when photographed in the storage yard at Chino. This one clearly has a different roundel (Bolivian?) and has inboard wings and engine mounts attached. The nearest I have found is a former Nicaraguan AF one "50" (ex. 44-0020) that was stored at Chino at the time - but my photo clearly shows "60" and the roundel is certainly not Nicaraguan.

No, not a Norseman, but I do not know what it is. The yard was crammed with stuff that we could not identify .

A quick update - I have just discovered that the Nicaraguans used a Red/Yellow/Blue roundel before their white triangle in a circle was used - so it looks like this is indeed 44-0020 and the books are wrong about the FAN serial being "50".

I reckon the mystery aircraft in the fore ground could be a Fairchild Argus

I don't know. I think maybe an early Cessna like the CWA. Something from the 1920s.

You know when humble tastes good, when you sit down on a monday night and trawl through all 7 volumes of aircraft of the fighting powers. To which we can all breath a sign of relief as the nice you man earlier suggested it to be a stinson and it is, its a Reliant but fitted with a DF aerial and thats what threw me off it. I hope some one saves it

It looks like there is some harvard canopies in front and those wings in the foreground look like curtis cw 21 wings, they can't be harvard because the wheel well looks the wrong shape

I believe that I seen that aircraft in 1980 and it took me a long time to get an ID for it. Unfortunately I no longer take the numbers and I have no idea where my logs would be.

However, I wonder if there has maybe been a mistake along the way.
http://www.aerialvisuals.ca/AirframeDos ... rial=52842

The reported serial for the Chino A-20 was GN50, there is a possibility that it is a mistype as Aerovisuals seems to the the only source on the internet to the existence of an A-20 at Chino. After all how many Nicaraguan AF A-20s were there at Chino.
There are not that many around so the chances of it being GN60 instead of GN50 is fairly high.

I agree Wallace - a mistake has been made somewhere along the line. I have contacted Aerialvisuals and uploaded a copy of my photo so hopefully somebody over the pond can do a little checking.

Also, thanks to Jag for identifying the wreck in front of it as a Stinson Reliant - all we need to do now is get an identity for it :-)
