Tommy at RIAT

Post by Tommy »

Hi All,

It's been a frustrating day today down on the west-end with RWY09 in use, meaning most stuff landing is ruined by heat-haze. Plus I'm running on about an hour's sleep since Monday evening, so I'm a tad all over the place. Whilst Andy has been doing yet another sterling job of posting pictures here for Live Arrivals, I've been live-tweeting from UKAR's Twitter account (as best I can). Be sure to follow both the forum and Twitter tomorrow to get the most out of our RIAT arrivals cover.

Anyway, I'm prattling. As I say, a frustrating day, here are some of the highlights. I would have edited more, but I'm running on fumes, and my bed is calling me like a Siren:

1. Lot of freedom flying about today...

3. Not sure how I feel about the look of these yet, nice and smart, obviously, but *right*? I'm not so sure:

Thanks for looking if you got this far. As ever, I would love C&C.

Sadly I wont be able to do a similar thread tomorrow evening as I'm being dragged to Cardiff by the other half... :wall:

All the best, and enjoy the weekend. Keep checking UKAR's live arrivals thread and our Twitter page. As soon as we have the info (and are satisfied it's not just an "I reckon" type of rumour)

All the best,

Tom

Great shots Tom - looks better than east today with 09 in use.

Cheers bud, I'm still not too sure it was that good for anyone with 09 in use, but wind is wind ( :music: ).

Anyway, stupidly late, as I've been to Cardiff and back to have the most sensational steak dinner.

Couple hastily-edited highlights from today. Couldn't stick around for the Su-27 rehearsal, but I have seen its display before and look forward to it this weekend!

It's been a frustrating day at West P&V, what stuff did come by, the clouds covered the sun at exactly the wrong moment

Really not a fan of the tight crops on the fixed-wings, but the Chinook looks lovely!

Agree, the Chinook looks great.

It's funny but until your picture I had never noticed the wheel configuration before of having doubles on the front but singles at the back.

If someone would have asked me I would have bet the house on it being the other way around or doubles everywhere as they always land tail down and you would assume there were greater load bearing requirements at the back.

Duly noted re the tight crops. Only using my 150mm-600mm (which isn't very long at the 150mm end!), which necessitated crops that tight.

That's it, I cba to edit anymore, I'm going to sit back and enjoy the show weekend.

As per, would love C&C on these. It's been a very, very frustrating couple of days at RIAT. Endless crap lighting and grey clouds. Cancellations (whether outside DBH's remit or not), fish from the pond disappearing would have been disappointed.

Very nice pictures. Personally I like the tight crops if it's done with a mixture of shots, it can get boring if they are all wider crops especially on the larger aircraft.

Re: Tommy at RIAT *Updated November* - Image Heavy (Sorry)

Post by Tommy »

Well it's been several months, and now that I've had some sleep, and am not on Live Arrivals duties, I should probably get around to updating this thread for pics from the rest of the show!

Firstly, a couple more from Weds - Friday (feedback re. the tight crops noted)

35.The Jordanians are oft overlooked at the show year on year. If they weren't so regular, I'm sure many would be positively salivating at their gorgeous Herk. Their crews are delightful, too. I think RIAT really means a lot to them, which is awesome:

36. These guys' sneak-pass at P&V caused many a near brown-trouser incident, I think. I was more ready for their much slower and tamer formation pass

40. Tom Fletcher of McFly/McBusted fame managed a back-seat ride in the Thunderbirds' jet prior to the show. Think he's struggling to keep his head upright!

41. Rare as hell these things, and I love that we've seen them this year and last year. Turkish '135s, in all their dirty oily glory.

43. Really frustrating the single-seater didn't visit the West-end loop on Thursday, especially as the tower dialogue went something like "roll to the end" "ok" *vacates right halfway down the runway*

Sunday was spent in Totterdown. I think the way things are going, its days are numbered, which may or may not be a bad thing. I'll always kick myself for never doing at least one day at Rhymes with the camera, and now that's gone, so I thought I'd go back to Totters this year. Tbh I'm glad I did, but it's not something I'm going to make a point of doing ever year. I went with the camera, I experienced it, had some jolly good laughs with some chums, and hopefully got some shots that are slightly different than my Saturday shots.

A very comprehensive set from a great show. It's nice to see the 'West is best' perspective compared to the 'full of Eastern promise' shots.

I love your Totterdown Raptor shots. Fantastic post.
