What do you do with your piccies ??

Post by Airwolfhound »

So, just out of idle curiosity, what do people do with their images once edited ? What is the aim of your photographic hobby ?

For me, I just love taking photos, always experimenting with editing, and trying to get as much enjoyment out of the hobby as I can. My photos tend to go up on Flickr and on my Face-Ache pages and other groups on FB. Occasionally I will share them up on various forums such as this one. The overall result is for me to get a pic that I'm happy with, and I am not bothered about views or comments on anywhere where I may show them. If people like seeing them then that is a plus, but I don't get upset if I put a photo up on Flickr and I don't get any views on it, likewise Facebook or instagram. However, I am aware of people complaining if they stick a photo up and it doesn't get any views.

So, as per the title, what do you do with yours ?

Apologies if already been a topic on a thread somewhere, I didn't look that far down the list

My best ones get posted up on my FaceTube page, mainly because it's an easy way of being able to have a flick through whilst bored at work.

I simply enjoy taking them. I have a look through them on the PC once home from a day out, pic out my favourites and maybe edit one or two but that's about as far as it goes. My editing skills are very limited and thus I spend very little time doing so. I find it a real chore, extremely boring and time consuming.

I email out a few to magazines where I've been published before. But other than that, they sit stored on an external hard drive and very rarely get looked through.

I use to post images on forums but haven't done so in over a year now (have never posted photos on face-ache).

One of the things I love about the "themed" threads in this place is that it's the perfect excuse to dust off some old pics and bring them out into the light again. God only knows what utter magic is stuck locked away on people's hard drives.

Or, at least, it is for me.

I'm a real dinosaur, each winter I print off the best ones and place them in a album! I don't take a massive amount of photos as I specialise in types (de havilland, Miles, percival, propliners) and aircraft that visit my local fields. Almost everyone of those shots will be a side on photo and show the reg! I simply take photos to document the aircraft I have seen, not for the art of photography.

A picture that taken and never shared may as well never have been taken in the first place.

A lot of my stuff is "record shots," mainly because the common of today is the rare of tomorrow and they go up onto my Flickr site.

I tend to do that, but there's one or two types that I particularly concentrate on such as Stearmans and Harvards/Texans, always on the lookout for those that I haven't seen before.

Edit them for sharing on Flickr, post them to UKAR, FC and sometimes TalkPhotography (though I may stop doing this soon as it's rarely worth the effort these days for a single comment) and not a lot from there. Back them up onto DVDs once the guff has been deleted, and very occasionally get some prints done.

A picture that taken and never shared may as well never have been taken in the first place.

This is true, but a lot of what I (we all?) take is quite repetitive. I'll shoot off a few images from a landing/takeoff/airshow pass, but invariably some won't make the grade and you'll only edit one or two even if there are half a dozen that could be used, so in that regard the overwhelming majority of what is captured is indeed, never seen.

Possibly, but I think that's a bit of a disjointed view. Digital has only been around for a few years, how many decades of wet-film photographs are out there, that as you put it "may as well have never been taken in the first place", only for them to surface years later from someone's loft and for people to be pawing over them as they've never been seen before?

How many professionals "share" their images. Not many, if any, unless they are published.

How many wedding/event/contract photographs are taken that are not shared?

The amount of unshared images in existence has to be a phenomenal figure!

Why do you have to share your images? Photography is a personal thing, if you enjoy taking photos and are happy with what your results, why do they need to be shared?

Unless of course you require gratification from face-ache/twitter/flicker likes and comments to boost your own ego.

Any more quotes from Confucius?.

I was drawing aeroplanes before I started photographing them and when I got my first decent 35mm film camera I was taking photos as reference material for drawing aeroplanes, mainly scale drawings. When digital came along the drawing side of things trailed off but I'm still taking photos as reference material for drawings. I'm in the process of getting the drawing side of things up and running again.

Seeing that you mention it....

You shine out like a shaft of gold when all around is dark

You make me want to be a better person

Well, nobody's perfect.

You can't handle the truth!

When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs. When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence.

Photography has no rules, it is not a sport. It is the result which counts, no matter how it is achieved.

The whole point of taking pictures is so that you don’t have to explain things with words.

The single most important component of a camera is the twelve inches behind it

Your first 10,000 photographs are your worst.

Back to the subject :
As for me, I usually publish on flickr what I consider as my best shots and share them on a French forum and on UKAR.
Each year, I select the 12 "best of the best" and I have two A3 calendars printed, one that I offer to my airshow buddy, and one that I put on my desk on my workplace.
Apart from enjoying my pics everyday, and remembering past year's highlights, it helps sometimes bringing the conversation on my hobby, which is a change from the usual footbal, politics, or worse ...

I feel like i’ve only very recently reached the point where I can justify the expense of printing one or two of my images for my own enjoyment; never done it before.

Obviously when I’ve got the time & cash I’ll look into it properly, but if anyone has any tips/advice, it’d be greatfully received.

I usually put my best or favourites into a folder then let Win 10 either cycle them every 10 minutes or so, or just leave my pc running and the same happens with my screensaver, it's like a giant version of one of those photoframe thingies that were all the rage a few years ago.
Sometimes something pops up from years ago, something that I'd forgotten all about, that is usually the start of a good bit of reminiscing between me and the wife.

I have a similar thing on my tablet as well.

Just spotted this thread--'what do you do with your piccies'--well,after 50 years of shooting anything that took to the air, when 20+ airshows a year was achievable ! I am asking myself that ! Having shot around 75,000 slides,then,--going digital over the last 15 years(20 HDD's worth) with more and more images accumulated --I am 74 now, wife not interested, son not interested - will never manage to scan all my slides for posterity--you look at your own mortality --happy days !! --but I enjoyed it !!-especially Kodachrome and Fujichrome slide boxes dropping on the floor-anticipating if,for example, Mildenhall 88 was it a success ?

A selection of mine end up on Flickr, and some on Facebook. I've toyed with the idea of selling prints, but the possible revenue would probably only just cover the admin costs, so I've not taken it further (yet).

I've been putting images (scanned slides mainly plus a few from negatives, and digital images more recently) on A.net (I know, boo, hiss!) for some time now, although getting a little disillusioned at the moment as I can't seem to get anything taken at Heathrow accepted at the moment, although they look to me at least to be equal to many that are being accepted, but then again it is their site, and they are entitled to accept or reject any photo as they see fit.

Personally for me, photography is just a strong hobby, so I don't really do much with my images apart from put a few on Flickr and share them here. It's always nice to flick through them or show to someone if they are interested.

What I ideally want with my images, is for them to be used. I'm proud that Navy Wings are using one of my Sea Fury shots from the Yeovilton nightshoot on their website, and that's the kind of way I want my images to be used. For the good of the hobby to attract new people into it, or to help organisations get some more exposure for themselves etc.
