Another Hunter ruined..

Post by st24 »

I just don't get why people can't paint Hunters properly.... Poor old '612 was in ripple for a loooong time, still should be..

Is it an inaccurate scheme then (genuine question) or just that you prefer the ripple paintjob?

It's inaccurate. Should be matte green/grey camo with the large squadron markings.

I have no idea what the owner was thinking :/

He was thinking, 'It's my aeroplane and I can paint it however I want'.

I get that attitude with something like (say) Miss Demeanour - a unique one off scheme that was completely the owners whim and fancy and mimics no former military scheme . This however is very nearly there; a conscious decision was made to add actual military Sqn markings and codes - just by using Dark Sea Grey and dark Green rather than the desert scheme it would have been a great replica rather than a rubbish could have been...

Entirely probable. But following that thought process, the next thought was "I've never seen a Hunter in 8 squadron marks with a glossy, but also drab sand camo scheme. I bet that'd look fantastic!"

It is not "ruined", merely painted in a scheme the owner selected. I think it looks great, a positive step forward. When I get one I will paint it in a scheme I like too.

does anyone know what is happening with it? is it returning to gate guardian duties or will there be a return to flight?

Its not ruined at all, paint can be stripped and applied time and time again. Chopping it up into tiny little pieces, melting it down into ingots and then making razor blades will ruin it, somebody is just offended its not in its original colour scheme. Hey ho, tough luck

I heard a rumour that it was going to an owner in France. But I stress that was a rumour.

As for the colour scheme, true it's the owner's choice but painting it in those colours and then sticking RAF roundels and tail flash on it is a bit strange.

Err... there is an embedded Tweet pic in the original post but in case that does not show in your browser try here's a link

IMHO it looks just fine in the camo and I don't understand why everyone is getting so over excited about - so a bloke paid to have a plane, which you have no influence, over painted a colour scheme of his choice. Personally I've never seen the attraction of the 'ripple' scheme - to me it just looks cheap, lazy and as if it was thrown together using whatever paint they had in the cupboard - just my 2p. :handbag:

Gloss paint gives better preservation than matt,

A matt coat will hold dirt and can prove difficult to keep clean, when cleaning great care needs to be taken as the actual process of cleaning can actually remove the finish.

With gloss the finish provides a durable and scrubable surface which dirt finds much harder to grip too, the added bonus with gloss and semigloss coats id that they offer a much better resistance to moisture.

From my knowledge of the CAA regulations, I believed it was the case that if you wanted to gain an exception to not display the G- registration it must be a historically accurate colour scheme, correct for the aircraft type in question..? :dunno:

Does your knowledge extend to that applying only to airworthy aircraft ?

Wash your mouth out about ripple- it was "thrown together" to provide a unique hi-viz finish for all a/c types employed in test and trials operations and give a more corporate look to an incredibly disparate array of schemes pre '76 ish. And it ruled - my 2p worth.
No one's getting over excited, offended or any other OTT adjectives, well certainly not me - I'm just bemused that after going to the great expense and time of repainting something then why not get it right?? :dunno:
Anyways, Hunters didn't go matt until the early '70s so a semi-gloss finish would be just fine and dandy...

Although historically it's not right, it's a well thought out and executed "what-if". The scheme pattern looks right, accurate unit markings applied and accurate colours of the time used.

But I did like it in raspberry ripple.

Sorry, using IE11 here and twitter is banned :O
Having now seen it.... looks a lot better than the weathered ETPS scheme it wore, and will give it more protection from the elements should it remain outside for long periods.

Personally I'd have painted it in matt blue with a stick, slapped some 92 squadron markings on it and it would have looked fantastic! :hypno:

Jeez by the header title I thought the worst for a moment!!
I do appreciate your point thou,I was mortified when the new owner re-sprayed the Canberra PR9 a couple of years back and it lost all the lovely tail art from its final RAF days and turned it into a silver jet!

Aluminium alloy razor blades would probably ruin your face...!

Absolutely agree with your point, though!
