Nice shots but imo could be improved by not cropping so tightly
If you like these pics there are more utterly brilliant shots at https://www.flickr.com/photos/131094099@N08/albums

Really like these. I get the cropping point, but I actually quire like it. There's a lot of detail to look at.

Can someone explain the reason for the DP tailcodes? Are they the only USAF unit to have their tail codes match their nickname (it's DogPatchers or something, isn't it?) rather than their base name?

Really really need to get back to the SW USA!

The DP tailcode is unique to the 47th FS stands for “Doppatchers” and is an official nod to the squadrons ww2 heritage where they painted characters from the dog patch cartoons on their aircraft.

Similar to the 100ARW at Mildenhall carrying the letter D to recognise they flew from the UK as bombers in the Second World War.

FF = First Fighter (1st FW)
FT = Flying Tigers (23rd FG)
JZ = 159th FW, but I can't remember what it's for!
OT = Operational Test (53rd WG)
WA = Weapons and Agressors, I was told (57th WG)
WP = Wolf Pack (8th FW)
WW = Wild Weasels (35th FW)

ZZ of the 18th WG is a carryover from the Vietnam War, they just never got a new code it seems!

There may be more...

I don't know if this will help or not but first.... they are your pictures and you can do whatever you want with them, however cropping so closely just renders them pictures of a plane. Nothing more or nothing less, just a plane.
The environment that a plane is in can add value to the overall picture if it's not cropped out.

Please refer to the first statement, I wholly endorse that and afterward is just my opinion.

They are an interesting set of pictures and the mission symbols on 980 is worth a close up all to itself. Some paper round that ones been on.

I can see what you mean but in this case there is no "environment". If they are not cropped tightly we would just see more sky, which to me is boring. What is the point of a wide crop with a bunch more blue sky? I'd rather see more detail on the aircraft itself.
