WIP Trumpeter 1/72 Xian JHU-6 - now finished

Post by DerekF »

Another stash lurker. I thought I'd do a build thread to kick off 2018.

The preliminaries. Looks a good kit.

First update.

The cockpit. Quite nice bt very small for someone used to to bigger scales. There's some PE parts that I haven't put in as most of it will disappear behind the heavy glazing.

In place in the nose section.

Some of the 50g of weight the instructions call for. I hope the landing gear is strong enough.

The wings completed.

The engine pods ready to attach to the fuselage side. I've found that 1/48 scale Phantom drop tanks fit nicely in the intakes as Trumpeter had not provided any detail. They did provide a couple of intake covers to insert.

Fuselage together and engine pods added. . I've left the nose section off until I know if it needs any more weight in the nose.

Wings added. It looked OK until I looked head on and everything was twisted. I've packed out the underside joint of the left wing to keep the anhedral correct.

With the tailplanes added. A fair bit of filler needed on most of the joints.

Next job is tidying up the joints and checking with the landing gear fitted that the nose weight is enough.

This boxart shows an interesting refueling technique ...
Hope that the parts of this kit are better aligned than the trajectories of these planes !

That thing looks huge Derek.

It is quite big. Almost the size of the Nimrod. Fit is quite good but I have had problems with things lining up, engine s, wings etc. It'll be fine when the wheels are on. I'm sure.... There are grand total of 8 decals to put on. I'll find some stripes and stencils to cheer it up a bit.

Now complete. Not a bad kit but a lot of fiddly bits and slightly obscure instructions.

Great stuff and a type I'd never even heard of. Looks like it'll be an impressive addition!
