Lanc over Derwent

Post by Mooshie1956 »

I've had a heads up that the Lanc is going over Derwent Dam on the 16th May around 12.05.

I've been keeping an eye out for stuff commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Dams raid, and have been rather disappointed that nothing much seems to be happening. I had no doubt though, that at least the Lanc would put a pass in on the day. Let's hope for good weather that day.

Hoping to get down for it. Last time 10 years ago it was a long walk to get up and slightly beyond the East side of the dam.

I may be wrong, but I think they do something every year, officially or unofficially, but the 5 and 10 year anniversaries tend to draw in the crowds.

I'm not sure whether they do something on the anniversary itself every year but it's quite a common sight see the BBMF over the reservoirs of the Peak District throughout the season as they transit from or to base.

By then there might also be a chance of a Mosquito (last seen at Derwent 1993 I think). Never seen a Mustang there, though 617 operated one towards the end of WWII. Hope I'm still fit enough to get there!

I went in 2013, got there about 8am,was the first person to park on the road outside fairholmes visitor car park.

Fairholmes is disabled parking for this event. it soon got busy, so get there early.

Was really good in 2013 with the GR4'S , i hope there are some surprises this year, would love to see a F35 Lightning over the dams, but don't even think we have any yet!

Some photos from 2013 - 70th

https://flic.kr/s/aHsmfd78CG

Parking and traffic restrictions
The permanent traffic signals at the following locations will be manually controlled in peak times (especially post event to all speedy departure from the area)
Junction A57 / A6013
Junction Station Road, Bamford / Sickleholme
A mandatory Temporary 20mph speed limit will be in place along the A57 (between Cutthroat Bridge westerly for 2.6 miles)
Derwent Lane will have single file parking along southbound carriageway only, when car parks are full. There will be Traffic Operatives in place to direct traffic in 4 sections to control flow of traffic. There will be three no passing points in place for Emergency vehicles on Derwent Lane
Hagg Barn car park to be signed for motorcycles only
Fairholmes Car parks to be reserved for disabled traffic
New Road, Bamford will become a one way (westbound only); this will be all day unless otherwise signed
Lydgate Lane, Carr Lane and Thornhill Lane will also will become a one way (west / southerly direction); this will be all day unless otherwise signed. This creates an anti-clockwise gyratory with the A6013 in the middle
No parking areas (cones and signage at various points on the A57 / A6013 / Bamford village) will be identified and enforced by Police and Civil Enforcement Officers.

I was there in 2013 too. Your pics brought back memories from a good day out. I messed up my photos of the Lancaster so fingers crossed for this year. Was nice to see the GR4's though. I had hoped one pass would be swept but is wasn't to be.

As for this year, I can only see info for the Lancaster so if a Spitfire or Hurricane turn up, that would be a bonus. 617 will still be in the USA so no F-35's.

I think the Typhoon was going anyway, i went in 2008, 2 tornadoes came as well, 2013, 2 tornadoes and a spitfire, rare they just send the lanc up on its own.

Seeing as we only have a few tornadoes left etc.

They dont say if another date is planned, which is a bit odd.

What im saying is the last 2 5 year ones, 2008 and 2013 , the Lancaster was the only thing advertised, the tonkas showed up twice.

@RAFBBMF are all very disappointed not to fly the Lanc today for the 75th Anniversary of the Dambusters. Happily a 29 Sqn Typhoon will cover for us - Derwent at 1205, Eyebrook at 1222. It will not cover Belper, Chatsworth or Derby owing to low flying regulations. Lest We Forget.

Odd that, the tornadoes flew through Chatsworth in 2008 with the Lancaster

I’ve just been informed that the Typhoon could not make it to the Derwent Dams due to poor weather at low level. Sadly there will be no flypast of the Derwent dam. Please focus on the amazing achievements and losses of the Dambusters 75 years ago tonight.
